Why does society view autistic people as mentally incompetent?

It goes both ways. When I "came out" as autistic to my co-workers, many people commented, "Ohhh, that's why you're so smart." "I've always thought you were a savant." The Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" sort of "professor". On the other hand, you have "The Rainman" and "Love on the...

    I don't see my autism a problem

Furthermore... 1. We've had some long discussions about how trauma and PTSD occur... and a lot of it has to do with "intent"... and if it is malicious... it can imprint itself as such. Bullying is a problem within some schools and communities. The young, impressionable, often deeply feeling...

    I don't see my autism a problem

Good for you. For some of us, autism comes with a long list of pros and cons, not to mention everyone's "autism" is unique to them. There are a lot of things I, as an ASD-1/Asperger's variant, can push through, adapt, and overcome personally, but for others the identical things can present...

    Managing insurance authorization paperwork

I am thinking your best source of information would likely come from established mental health hospital and clinic administrative/billing/coding staff... as well as social workers. These folks are more likely to be of help navigating a rather complex system as this.

Been getting to know my son more

As you may already know, "LGBTQ issues" as you put it, are common to the autism spectrum. There's some neuroscience behind it, but regardless of how it all "comes out in the wash"... as a parent, be conscious not to "nudge" an impressionable young mind one way or the other but do let them...

    I got a frog :]

Love that color. Very expressive eyes and face. Maybe, someday, a 55 gallon terrarium and a few friends for him? Perhaps a girlfriend or two.

Post a picture of your mind

Revisiting this thread after nearly 5 years. "Post a picture of your mind". I have found it interesting how people interpreted this. I interpreted it in two different ways. 1. When I close my eyes... this is quite literally what I see (view attachment)... not an analogy or representation...

    dual diagnosis bipolar and autism

There can be some crossover with autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and schizophrenia... if you can imagine a Venn diagram. Some traits are common to more than one of these conditions.

    Extreme social anxiety

I am thinking the broader issue is not necessarily obtaining a driver's license and ownership of personal transportation, per se, as it is about personal mobility, not being socially isolated, and having access to the greater community, social environment, and job opportunities.

Has 'AutismForums' ever been in the news?

Seems to me like it might be a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, you do increase the awareness and attention of the greater autistic community. On the other hand, you also increase the awareness and attention of the potentially toxic, sociopathic, psychopathic, and narcissistic...

    Extreme social anxiety

Your psychologist... in my opinion, is going about things in the wrong way... trying to fix symptoms without addressing the problem. Perhaps something to discuss... but often times the underlying mechanisms of all of this lie within your ego (sense of self) and default mode network (logic and...

    AA sucks.

Wow! That's messed up. That's a whole different mindset than what I would have.

    Hey

My experience, as well. I wasn't a "failed neurotypical", I was just a typical person with an autism condition. Hindsight is 20/20. Can't do anything about the past... but now that you have a better idea of who you are, you can take certain things into better consideration, context, and...

    AA sucks.

I am thinking that if you are amongst a group of people that are trying to heal, but also still dealing with depression, guilt, rumination, poor self-esteem, etc.... it is likely that this sort of mind set is present. It's only amplified within a group situation due to this phenomenon of a...

    Sensitivity repeat exposure

I think it depends upon what it is. Things like physical pain and temperature sensitivities, for example, are "adapted to" relatively easily for me. Light and sound sensitivities, on the other hand, are rather difficult.
