Accepting differences within our differences

As a volunteer for those with learning differences, I have confidence that things will work out well for all of us. However, we will first need to accept ourselves before we accept other people like us.

My experience is, in all countries, from Australia, United States to Singapore, what Aspies, Auties and even people with 'learning differences' want is, we need timely, effective and positively encouraging social resources for all of us. This is not evident in Plank's website, this is also not seen in autism organisations such as Autism Speaks, Autism Society of America and so on.

In addition, some of us may feel uncomfortable divulging more of our conditions because we are not sure how it will affect our career, given our high levels of job insecurity in our credibility-sensitive positions, where all it takes just one rumor to pull us down and to taint our job performance. Some jobs are just different from others.

This is why we may need to support each other socially, regardless of the Aspies' decisions to divulge their conditions, and regardless of current ability and motivations - so long as our friends have a need to be supported. There is nothing to hide, but there is nothing some of us would want to risk when it comes to our other priorities, such as our careers.

I also believe that any new organisation faces its obstacles, especially when it reaches the point where all co-founders of an enterprise get into conflict, due to 'ideological differences'. Also, from a video I watched, different people may need autonomy, mastery and a sense of common positive purpose to work togehter. I believe Aspies (and most other people) are really creative and resilient to choose the outcomes of their destinies, if they go through the different possibilities of life with trusted friends and family members.

Geordie this is very eloquent. I think you hid the nail on the head. Everyone regardless of community, country, culture just wants to be accepted. We all want to feel included, needed, useful, loved, etc... We all want to know that we can tell people about our conditions and that its all right to do so. I wish that even though it seems that places have moved forward in terms of acceptance of differences. We still have a very very long way to go in order to truely even accept ourselves and others with differences.

So I hope, through Aspies Central, we have found a place where we can accept ourselves for what we are. I am sure we both feel well supported in AC. We can talk about our interests, our interests with other people, who may not share our views, but respect where we all are coming from.

Let us accept ourselves and others, regardless of our differences, so that we can be ourselves :)
