By the gods, by all that?s holy, all that?s good and right in the world, I am a foolish man; I have an infinite capacity for stupidity. There are no bounds to my own lack of intelligence!

(Oh look he?s on another rant; he?s probably frothing at the mouth, poor thing?)

No, all you naysayer?s, I am of sound mind and even sounder typing skill, let me explain.
Follow along the twisted path of my ever tumultuous thought processes and revel in the glory of insanity as I create yet another odd blog and clear out yet another corner in the attic of my mind.

Yes I have been drinking, what?s your point?

Oh MY point, yes I was going to explain wasn?t I? Do you really want me to go on? I suppose you?re fed up with the usual junk I ramble on about! Well buckle up skipper, this ones gonna get a bit crazy!

Here goes:
So, I realize now that I live in a fragile fantasy world of my own creation, one where I am the lord and master, its safe in here and I know what?s going to happen at any given moment, except where I have to interact with the rest of the universe (which is all the time). I have one consolation in all of it, and that is imagination, and this is regularly captured and fed by a few like minds in places like Hollywood, to name but one.
I just watched the trailer for the new Spider-man film and it totally blew my mind, I have always loved the idea of superheroes, people who for no other reason than they can, just going out there and helping to set the world to rights in SPECTACULAR fashion, no, not fashion as in; oooh that chiffon skirt is to die for.
I cant understand how something so awesome isn?t the topic of discussion for every human being at ALL times, what a wonderful world this would be (to quote a famous song) if there were actually superheroes.

For **** sake, how old am I? Like twelve? No I am a full grown adult with a unique perspective on the world that allows me to delight in the mundane, see potential where there is only failure and to recognize beauty in the bleak.
Yes I know, ?Beauty and The Geek? was a good show, even had a few seasons downunder, but I digress.
How can there not be superheroes? Well there are, to a degree. Like many newsreaders around the world, I thank all those animals, women and of course men who do a tough job on a daily basis, like the firey?s, ambo?s and coppers, the elite that enter the armed forces and lifesavers and doctors and blah, and blah, blah, and blah, blah, blah.

I of course am talking about Superheroes, regular run of the mill folk that have developed powers or gained insight or pioneered new technologies that have to be tested.
I mean, always, as far back as I can remember, which isn?t very far just now cause my foots gone to sleep. I?m sitting on it LOL

(Wait, he?s gone all strange again, how?s that bit tie in with anything else that he?s said so far? shut up, just keep reading!)

Anyway, since I was a wee tiny little fella getting set upon by my brother, I always wanted someone to swoop in and save the day, to say that one meaningful sentence that would set everything back on track, make me better understood and make people think about their actions before doing anything bad again.
Doesn?t work like that kid, grow up, eat your veggies and harden up or you?ll get trampled upon, that?s how it works!
Of course the world is harsh and you have to take your lumps but, doesn?t it feel good to escape back into your little fantasy world, don?t you ever just go to that spot where everything is peachy and imagine what it would be like if the rest of the world was like your secret fantasies. For me its superheroes, I so desperately want to hear there is a caped crusader or a masked vigilante out there taking back the night for us fine upstanding citizens, but of course that doesn?t happen and that?s why films like this are so popular. There is actually a documentary about people who dress like heroes and try to make a difference, that isn?t what I mean but kudos to them anyhow!

Take it from me people, you need to bask in the glory of imagination, don?t ever lose that fire in your core, if there is a tiny glimmer of hope in the farthest reaches of your otherwise tainted and world-weary soul, don?t let it be dampened, diminished or destroyed, feed its light, nurture it back to a semblance of health, re-instate it as a recognizable part of the fa?ade you put on for your daily interactions with the real world, have it shine through and be seen by as many people as possible?
Be your own superhero, smile when you?re sad, and give a dollar to a bum, if the boss chews your arse of, say that you appreciate the feedback as it helps you to reevaluate and enhance your performance, if someone belittles or intimidates you, assume they must be in a worse mood than you rather than visiting the most heinous demons in hell upon them.

I don?t know, I am just babbling now and I am not really drunk, it?s all theatrical; I just wish that it would make a difference! I mean, who does it hurt to talk to a lonely person for ten minutes, sure their not going to buy anything, but if you can put a smile on their face then you are probably their hero for just that short while, and surely that?s made a difference to the way the world works, if it doesn?t then I have to believe that it at least inspired someone else to do something similar and that that will make a difference.

If it doesn?t then the whole world can go to hell? oh wait, we already are ; ]

Superheroes are the new mythology. We don't believe in gods (plural) anymore and the God of the Bible, well, there's just something about him that just doesn't satisfy, if you get my meaning. He just doesn't get involved. And His Son, well, that was a long time ago, too. I don't see Him swooping down and rescuing people either.

So we have to invent the kinds of deities/heroes that we wish really existed but don't. We want so desperately to believe that we are not on our own, that someone out there cares. That someone will step in when needed.

My favorite superheroes are Batman and Superman. Of the two I like Batman better. Superman is a bit too godlike, not really human. Batman doesn't have any super powers, he's just like the rest of us.

Spinning Compass, I am only too inclined to agree with you when you suggest humans are looking for a new deity. People do always need something to believe in.
I actually always try not to bring religion into my writing as I know this can be a contentious issue for some people, while I also understand that, some people may see it as being a little religious due to my use of references like: by the gods, by all that’s holy, may your gods keep you and suchlike. Now, I admit this is a throwback to my comic reading days but, I also feel I shouldn’t be saying oh my god if I believe myself to be an Atheist.

As a child, in times of crisis my first point of reference was of course the largest and most vivid thing available to me which was of course my imagination, and firmly lodged in there where the obvious, like Batman, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, all the golden oldies.

Batman was my own favorite too because here was a regular joe, a plain man who made himself the epitome of humanity, he did this for no other reason than a simple drive to keep all men safe, he then achieved it through honing his own mind and body and using these tools to deliver his message, which essentially was, if you do wrong you will be punished. He was an ordinary guy kickin’ it with all these dudes and chicks, the new guard, they had special suits or magical powers or something had transformed their lives and they were now more than the run of the mill folk and so they were looked up to by all the rest (can you draw any correlation here)
The Batman, a regular man who stood up and said; no more, and then he did something about it and he’s had books written about him. Mmmmm, maybe I am religious after all :geek:

Unfortunately none of us will be around to see it, but it would be very interesting to look several centuries into the future and see how many of these stories are still being told, like Batman. Batman may have started life as a comic book hero, which for some reason made him lesser in the eyes of the adults around me, but since then he has taken on a life of his own, and his story has been told many different ways. I don't see a Batman religion evolving (unless we go back to more superstitious and credible days), but I can certainly see how a story like that can be the seeds of mythology. At any rate I think it will be a long time before the Batman story dies out.

I also believe you can be "religious" and be an atheist as well. Nothing in atheism says you have to give up imagination, story, all the things that make us who we are. A world without these things would be impoverished indeed. I can appreciate the Bible for what it is, a work of literature that has stood the test of centuries, without putting it on an altar and making it into something it is not. There is much of the Christian about my own personal moral code and I don't apologize for that; there are in my opinion worse ways to live and worse codes to go by than to do unto others as you would have them do unto you and whatsoever you do to the least of these that you do unto Me, that sort of thing. Unfortunately many of my friends in the faith would say that is not enough and I must do more. But I cannot and will not assent to what I do not believe.
