Hello

Hello, my name is David and I have been diagnosed with ASD as of last Thursday. I’m currently 21 years old and the events of the past year have been quite the dramatic change from the life I’ve always known. It could probably make great script for a melo-drama.

I’ve been involved in a relationship for nearly a year now, and quite quickly there began to be problems that are associated with autism. Several months ago I did something that shocked me but to this day I still cannot emotional wrap my head around it. My girlfriend has been the most caring and forgiving around the way but things are now extremely strained.

All that heavy stuff aside, my interests and passions are for history and historical reenacting, hiking and the outdoors, horses, and and manufacturing museum quality reproductions and artifacts.

I came here hoping to receive help in navigating my new diagnosis and learning how to interact better with those around me. Thanks for allowing me to be part of this place.

David.

Those are some interesting hobbies you have. Do you have any specific eras of history you enjoy re-enacting?

There's a lot of books regarding Autism which can be very beneficial reading to help understand more about it.

Forums such as this are a great format too. People are very friendly and welcoming here.

Relationships can be tricky. I suppose nobodies relationships will be smooth sailing, but with the emotional issues that being on the spectrum can cause - it can feel like the good and the bad times are magnified.

Welcome David. I have yet to find an Autistic that has not had some cool or special interest and ability, but with difficulties too with either their relationship, employment and/or in their daily functioning at home and elsewhere, and so this is what the forum is for; to share those likes and abilities, and to talk of any issues in your life that you need better understanding of, or help with. So, you came to the right place for that. Feel free to share whatever you can, whenever you can. You did a great job with your initial post.

Being in Texas I’ve a wide span of history from early Spanish Colonial all the way through post Civil War, my favorite portrayals are Republic era. I’ve also the kit and knowledge for portrayals in the exploration of the Ohio River Valley and other 18th century periods, just never been able to make it that far out there yet.

Beyond online articles and Mark Hutten’s YouTube videos I’ve not much of a base of understanding just yet, Any and all resources would be very much appreciated!

I’m learning more and more how true that insight is, there was a short span of peace and understanding not long ago that felt nearly euphoric, now everyday I feel like I’m stuck in spiral that can’t be escaped.

Thanks, for the welcome Ed.

Thanks for the encouraging words, I’m certainly going to ask a lot and hopefully give as much as is taken. Growth and understanding is important to me now.

Hugh Thomas has written several books on the Spanish colonisation of the Americas.

With regards to the reproductions you make, what sort of items are these? Are they clothing, tools, weapons etc? I imagine reproductions would involve skills in a variety of areas. Were you self taught? Is it something that friends or family do as well?

I’ve not yet read those books, I’ll have to look them up.

I can make a variety of most anything, civilian related at least. Clothing hand sewn and in the proper patterns and shapes of the times, hat shaping and blocking, many different types of regional moccasins, leather goods, horn items, trade silver, native accoutrements. One of my most proud creations was of a 18th century Spanish carbine I built the lock virtually from scratch using cast metal parts from a kit.

it was all virtually self taught with the use of YouTube and books. The more primitive technologies were taught to me by a mentor when I was young. I’m the only one in my family who does this kind of thing. My social circle of friends and acquaintances is mostly filled up by fellow reenactors.

Welcome! Also a history enthusiast. One job I had was coordinating volunteers at a historic site, and I always loved the enthusiasm and energy that a lot of them brought with them and how some traveled a fair bit and returned for the main festivities each year. :-)

What site did you work at? I’ve been offered positions at various ones but I’ve a got certain things I wish to attain before I potentially go down that road.
