Thinking further, maybe the raft floating in water could see much gravel or many rocks in a dry creek bed? Rocks also tend to dry quickly.

A body of water is often thought of as blue but can be green or brown due to things like algae and mud. If stagnant it could reek. Not sure how the other parts would fit.
