A Curious Incident With Dead Calves

The incident with the dead calves goes like this:

A jeep or Humvee is driven by some guys onto The Place. They look like Native Americans. Their vehicle has snow on it even though there is no snow on the ground in the town part of The Place.

There are two dead calves in the back of the vehicle. One is black and the other is red with white spots. The black one has its tongue sticking out and the tongue is at least partly black, like the tongue of a Chow dog.

The men in the vehicle have long hair. One of them is wearing his hair in braids. Their jackets look like sheepskin with the wool inside. One of them is wearing cowboy boots that are a little worn, but expensive looking. The other one is wearing boots that might be winter climbing boots. Those boots are mostly black. I have Seen more descriptive elements about the men and their equipment, including their vehicle, but do not See it now. I do not know why.

The men are bringing the calves to The Place to help a Member who is sick and needs meat for the sickness. Most of the time the Members of The Place do not eat meat at this time. That is the town area members. Most of the wilderness area Members of The Place do subsistence and do eat meat. Some of them even sell meat. The ones who sell meat raise it themselves, like these calves.

In order for something unusual like the wilderness Members bringing their meat to the town part of The Place, there had to have been a vote to do this. Voting in The Place is done by raising hands at a meeting.

The voting on The Place I have Seen is done around a bonfire at night. The Members take their voting very seriously, but they do enjoy the meeting and bonfire.

One of the votes I have Seen was about spending money to buy a Member a fur coat because she has an illness that makes her get cold. Getting cold is very painful for her, so they vote to get her the coat. I am not sure why this happens since Members of The Place can and mostly do have their own money. They also are generous with their money, so it is kind of surprising that it is necessary to vote to get her the fur coat. Usually someone would have bought her the fur coat before a meeting was even considered to vote on getting it.

I wrote quite a bit more, but this site ate it all. I will have to do it again. Saving does not seem to work on this site, so I quit doing it. The only thing that seems to work is to publish. I hate to keep publishing every little bit as I go, but it is very bad losing so much writing, so I guess I will have to do that. I tend to move sections of my writing around as I work, but am not that used to ipads and this may not work for me either.

At the beginning, The Place is not that comfortable since there do not seem to be any buildings ready to live in. As i mentioned, the geodesic dome is the first or one of the first buildings finished and is used at first to house children at night. Women are next to be housed and are in a building with no roof at nights. It is just covered with something drapey, either tarps or a tent roof. The last people to get any sort of building are in all sorts of patched together things. Some of it is clear plastic and some is black or blue plastic or a combination.

This situation does not seem to last long, but it undoubtedly seems long to the people suffering through it.

The Members get to own their homes, but have to sell them to another member. It is not immediately apparent to me how Members get their homes built, or pay for them. There are some sort of dorms for mostly younger single Members, but most Members have their own homes. Some singles own their homes, but most are couples.

The situation with children on The Place seems confusing to me. The children Members on The Place may or may not live with their birth parents. It seems to be largely due to the choice of the children and some of them seem to move around a lot from one home to another. Sometimes a living room foor will be carpeted with small bodies, that might be for only one night or longer.

I do know that each child is assigned several mentors. The choice of mentors depends on the particular talents manifested by the child. If a child shows an interest in art, for example, they will have at least one mentor who is particularly talented in art. Shepherding the development of children is given high priority in The Place and a child may request a particular adult for a mentor or talk with and seek advice from any adult whenever needed.

Children vote as Members at a very young age. I would guess it to be no more than 13 years of age. In other ways as well as voting, child Members are treated with respect that is unusual for what I have seen around me during my life. The child Members of The Place seem to act differently than most children I have seen elsewhere. They are more often serious and much more inclined to work and be helpful, without direction to do so.

I don't know if it is immediately apparent, but the child Members of The Place fascinate me. I have not Seen that much about them, though. Probably one reason for this fascination is that I took a course in the Montessori teacing method and liked it very much. Since that time the Montessori teaching method has become an integral part of my life. I have used it whenever I babysat and even to train animals. I use it when I teach adults as much as possible. Adults can be resistant to new things that can include the Montessori teaching method, but I can usually manage to use at least a little of it. It often works very well to make learning easier. It is more demanding on a teacher, but with few students, that does not need to be a problem.

I will write more later.
