Embarrassing Aspie Moment at Work...

So i was at work on Sunday - as a cashier - like usual, and even though it was in the last two hours of my shift i was actually in a good mood. It was actually slow during the first and last two hours of my shift, which helped my stress levels a lot. So i ended up in a fairly good mood on my last two hours of the day when i'd normally be knee deep in a shut down by that point, or at least recovering from one. One supervisor, I'll call her Shakira cause for some reason i keep thinking that's her name even though i know for a fact it isn't. Anyways, I the printer ran out of receipt paper so i had to put more in. But for some reason the little built in groove that lets you untape it so you can put it in the printer wasn't there. It hadn't been used, that much was for sure, but it just didn't have it. So i had to look it over for a minute trying to figure out how to unroll it without the built in tape groove.

I guess Shakira noticed though cause she came right over and asked if everything was alright. I felt bad though cause i literally couldn't process what she was saying. Like i heard her talking, heard random words she said but couldn't process what she was saying. I felt bad just staring, uncomprehending, but I guess she was okay with it. I think i eventually just nodded and said it was okay cause i figured out the printer paper roll on my own while she was talking to me. She's one of my favorite supervisor though, she's professional and friendly enough at the same time and rather attentive and thorough as well.

I messed up in front of her the other day as well, actually. Makes me wonder if she suspects me as being an aspie...i'm comfortable with her, so i'm less inclined to fake it in front of her and the one other supervisor i'm comfortable with. The other day I was coming back from my lunch break and she just so happened to be the first supervisor i found - we usually have several on the floor at once - and she asked how i was. Her expression was different though and she doesn't usually ask that so i'm not sure why she asked that cause i couldn't read her intentions. And its not like i hadn't seen her at all that day either, so it was odd that she asked that then. I was frustrated that my badge hadn't scanned at the time clock like it was supposed to though, maybe she just picked up on that. I ended up ignoring the question though cause i wasn't sure how to respond and didn't want to fake it cause i can't fake it when i'm frustrated. Instead of replying i asked her how to get a new sticker for my badge, and instead of looking at her while asking i looked at my badge, glanced at her for a moment, and then wouldn't make eye contact. This was cause i was kind of nervous. She answered me, even offered to let me go back and get it fixed but i declined; to me, when i'm on the clock i should be working not fixing stuff i can fix off the clock. To me i don't know how she couldn't suspect me of being an aspie, i mean all that happened in one weekend! Plus i had problems with receipt paper prior to that, the groove tore wrong so i had to get someone to tear it right so it would go in the printer. I was frustrated and i have poor fine motor skills so i figured it would be quicker to just get someone to come over and do it for me. That way the customer didn't have to wait too long for the other half of their receipt. Again, considering all that happened in one week plus another coworker is, i think, a diagnosed aspie that came out when he got hired (as an aspie) idk how she couldn't be suspicious by now...then again knowing me i could be reading into it too much just trying to understand.

If she's friendly, why are you afraid? Will something bad happen to you if she knows you're on the spectrum?

Aspergirl4hire, I'm just nervous that i'll end up getting judged in a negative light if they knew i'm probably on the spectrum. Even if i'm fairly sure a coworker of mine is a diagnosed aspie, idk that for sure. Rationally, they'd probably be fine with it, especiall cause i've already been working there for two years, but i'm still worried nonetheless.

Hi Kari, I understand that. And it's true sometimes people aren't rational. I suspect that being aspie is about to become "trendy" now that celebrities are starting to self-identify. I'm hoping the presence of places like AC and the ANI (Asperger Network International) have enough presence so that people just learning to recognize people like us "in action" can judge for themselves. In your case, they already have--and you're still working. Keep breathing. I really liked how on-track you were for the task about the badge--and you could even use it as an example of how focused you are at work, that while you may be unable to process conversation in mid-task, you do focus well and a good supervisor can figure out how to use the strengths of the staff to create a good place to work and shop. Hope you're doing OK.

Thanks for the reply! Ugh i hope not. But I've seen several things about it in the news with different celebrities or high profile people either self-identifying as aspies or being labelled aspies, so i can see it happening - HFA/AS becoming sort of trendy. But eitherways, I agree, its a good sign that they probably know i have a few unusual weaknesses but still want me there nonetheless. I think working there has been really good for me, its taught me what my different weaknesses are and a few ways to deal with them in a work environment. Some of which actually manipulate aspie tenancies for my own benefit.
