i made a post in one of the fb groups im in. i asked if there were any connection to being born preme and becoming autistic and everyone, literally every person in the group misunderstood the question and made comments like,

"i was born late and still autistic"
"autism is genetic"
"its only genetic"
"if you were born preme, you have brain damage, autism isnt brain damage"

that last one was kind of the last straw. i say this was probably worse than if i had gone ahead and asked allistics or NTs

Sorry to hear that :/ If you ever need someone to talk or just vent to, I'd more more than happy to talk to you :) And you seem like a great person when we talked in the Chat Room last night as well :D

I don't get the last one either, real head-scratcher...I was born prematurely w/o brain damage. Can they explain that? True, autism isn't brain damage, but...

Just forget about them and make yourself at home here ;)

thank you guys for not being daft... that insulted the hell out of me. cuz im preme and i think i might have a little brain damage cuz oxygen supply but wow, it was said in a way that i was considered less than.

You're welcome Joy :) & yeah, people can be absolute pricks

Sounds like an awful lot of ignoramuses. Premie means being born late? Wow. There's no point being insulted by ignorance, though. I don't know if there's actually any connection (sort of doubt it), but you need to google some research papers. Even here, all you're going to get is personal experiences and opinions, always well-meant, but without any scientific basis.

I was premature! Maybe they could be connected? It’s sad how close minded some people can be :) My mum called me retarded when I was little and I used to think of myself as a disappointment due to being premature. Now I realise there’s nothing wrong with being born premature it doesn’t make you any different to the other people in this world. Sorry for ranting :|

my mom often called me "special" like she knew something i didnt. im sure she did. hence why im getting an adult diagnosis

Not all pre-mature born children have brain damage. They may have developemental delays in certain areas, which is very individual. Most pre-mature born children are able to catch up with their peers, and for a while it was thought children born pre-mature even developed more advanced skills than their peers because of being exposed earlier than the recommended time.

My family has a lot of pre-mature born children, not me. Although no one else but my nephew (15) and me have a diagnose on the spectrum. No one else has been tested to be honest. There are two more, including myself who also have ADHD. When my nephew (15) was born the doctor said that pre-mature children are more likely to have autism than those who come when due. He got his official diagnosis at 5 years old for high functioning Autism. The same was told for the other children as well, but none of them has gotten diagnosed yet.

Since it was informed by medical staff 15 years ago to my sister that there might be a link between the two there might be something to it. Or perhaps it’s a link that was believed, but has proven to not be true. You might be on to something. Definitely something worth looking up.

a lot of people in the group said they were born late and are autistic. i think pregnancy complications in general is one indicator. i know its genetic. but there are other things that trigger the gene right?

At some point I believe it just is. Happens to some people for no reason. As I mentioned, my nephew and me are the only two people on the spectrum. If it’s only genetics, why only us two out of all of the people in this gene pool? I don’t think there is a definite answer other than perhaps evolution as to why. But I do believe there might be factors that should be taken in to consideration to be triggers.

Maybe you should look up some studies, because I believe there might be studies on this exact same question you asked. In your comments here you have a majority of people saying they were born premature and have Asperger’s, so that would go against the majority in that group.

I was born a week early but, I was a twin that absorbed the other, I have situs inversus, and I am on the spectrum. I think its more of a hereditary thing my mother has a sister with 2 autisic children and i have an autistic brother. Plus i had an eccentric great aunt that had characteristics.

yeah genetics is a strong determining factor. i'm sure i got it from my father, but more i think about it, maybe my mom too.

Both my children were born exactly on time, both I seriously believe are on the spectrum, they're in their 30s now.
