I'd like to preface that I was raised in a somewhat middle class family and am quite grateful for all my parents have done for me at this point, as some of my descriptions may make it come off as my family is poor, which isn't the case. I'm just not exactly the greatest with my descriptions, so please, bear with me.

Christmas for me was exciting. It meant...well... Christmas, and then my Birthday which follows 3 days later (on the 28th). I'd make a list for Santa, and eventually would rename my Christmas list to "What I want for Christmas and/or my Birthday".
My parents would get me on approximate average, 5 to 6 presents, not counting stocking stuffers, and a few things for my brother as well. They'd also get me a few things for my birthday as well. While my Christmas of 2017 was great, not much was done for my Birthday; I made myself half arsed eggs benedict for my birthday breakfast. Now, I'm not being ungrateful at all, I was quite happy, though I should've lowered my expectations as I was used to getting presents and the like.
And then, the tail end of Summer 2018 happened. My parents decided to separate after just over 23 years of marriage, and are currently slowly trying to work towards full on divorce proceedings.
Christmas of 2018 was...alright, only got a few things, don't remember if I really got anything for my birthday, as it was a blur and I treated it as any other day.
As mentioned, my Birthday, along with Christmas, are going to be any other day for me and am going to treat them as such from now on. They simply don't bring me much joy anymore. I'm no longer going to make any lists for what I want, as I'd rather have my parents money go to more important things (alimony, bills, etc.). My happiness should no longer be a priority for them, as I'm about as content as I can be for the most part. Plus, I'm currently a 23 year old adult and can buy just about whatever I'd like at this point if I actually put some effort into saving my money.
