Re:People who worship intelligence

I knew of a few people who treat intelligence above any other character trait. My dad was raised in such a family, he was called a retard and that he would not be able to get good marks on the university exams. He still speaks so proudly that he got first place and how that "showed his dad" But it only makes me sad. He did not have to get first place, to prove himself after all.

Intelligence is something you are born with, and it is limited. It is under no one's control. Autistic people, or disabled people in general having to "prove themselves" with their intelligence, the thought of that disgusts me.

I once got called "that girl is not very smart is she" by one of my uncles, whom i suspect also verbally abused my dad the same way. I remember that day clearly, i cried so much afterwards. I felt like i was a disgusting person who should not exist.

Some years later, that uncle had a brain surgery that caused the loss of memory, and most of his brain functions. He was bedridden and had to live with a caregiver afterwards. When i think of this, i feel guilty too. Because i somehow, wanted to prove it to him that intelligence means nothing in this world because it is not certain that you will have it. And later, when something like that happened i felt conflicted. I felt like my anger and sadness that day caused this even though i know it is impossible.

Still i felt sorry for him, and i hope he was in peace when he died a few years later. In the end, everyone is powerless against what fate has in store for them. It made me think that. And shaped my beliefs about such people.

It is weird because behavior is something under people's control, intelligence is something you are born with, and you did not make an effort to earn it. Bc of this being proud of natural born talent or intelligence does not make sense to me.
It is simply "The Luck of the Draw", agreed.
An attitude of superiority is odd to me also, since certain characteristics are given to individual, not earned by them.
The same applies to physical attractiveness.

But honestly I just enjoy debate and it's not about winning or dominating for me, it's the learning process.
Having come from a domestic history of "Devil Advocacy", I am averse to debates.
I prefer discussions in order to share insights.

From my superficial appraisal of the situation:
In a nutshell:

Boogs made a lighter-hearted comment.
You changed the context to a more serious one.

This situation, if accurate, is totally pertinent to the thread subject matter.

What would I know about slime mould without it? 😜

@AprikR I'm sorry about your Uncles cruel comments to you and your Dad. He must be a very insecure person. Also remember "no one kicks a dead dog" (How to Win Friends and Influence People)

@AprilR - actually, I owe you an apology, I shouldn't have let myself get baited and drag this off topic - this is your blog, not an open thread, so I'll try and shut my big gob from now! 🙂

Childhood trauma is difficult to overcome.

I've been perceived as smart or intelligence.

I've always doubted this though due to the fickle nature of the concept. Intelligence is a difficult thing to wrestle with some people have a great deal of it others do not. That they are either born with high amounts of it or not. This is all so very misleading though for while it can predict performance in a lot of metrics it can't quite adequately predict the outcomes and the overall existence of individuals.

I observe that the people who make claims of so called intelligence are themselves going off of very little data and experience. So they map on whatever they can to the observant. Accurate or not(I suspect it's not). My policy... Well over the years I've tended to not pay these things(that is what people say about my supposed intellect) much mind. Though it is a dreadful thing how your family treats you and for that I convey my deepest apologies.

Neuroscience suggests behavior may not entirely be all that controllable either. Our brains seem focused on doing what it does without much conveyance to us as to why it even does it. Behavior could perhaps be a nearly biomechanical response. Of course on a higher level we "feel" as if we are "controlling" this. But then what is even control anyways? I suppose what I'm trying to get here is the fleeting nature of even "behavior" in of itself which need not even reflect intelligence at all.

The best way to look at intelligence is the way I looked at colour when working. what matters is difference not intensity.
