Overall, this fair is a compact yet promising and entertaining one, just for a weekend trip.
First and foremost, as a Brony, I am interested in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic-related cosplaying. I saw Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, and I feel honored to shake their hands. But I am surprised to see little Brony presence in the Convention, other than the cosplayers.
Then, I went to see Star Wars, Marvel Comics stuff, DC Comics characters figurines and, predictably, anime gadgets and toys, from all corners of the globe ? Philippines (with their anime channel setting up a booth in the Convention), Singapore, Japan and even the United States. I even see real-time comic drawing throughout the convention.
I met quite a few memorable people, mainly old acquaintances and sports and science related comic artists.
I got to catch up with a British comic arts artist, Jerry, who happens to be one of my friends? comic art teacher, and also a Singaporean artist who exhibited in a similar fair last year. Apparently, even his student (one being JHC Studio) is happy with what Jerry taught.
I remember seeing at least two Americans, both wearing NFL-themed gear ? one comes from Jacksonville, Florida and wore a teal Jags hat; while another hails from New York City but grew up in Los Angeles, explaining his Raiders-inspired T-shirt.
Another memorable character would be some gamers who sell Diablo 3 memorabilia ? and, unexpectedly, Jeremy Lin jerseys. Turns out, they are huge fans of the Japanese manga series Slam Dunk, like I used to.
I even got to meet Mr. Otto Fong, the popular Singaporean comic artist who specializes in science education comics. He even quit his full-time teaching job to draw comic series full time. Respect!
There is a doctor who also draws comics, and I referred his art work to my elder sister, who?s also a medical doctor by profession.
I also got to know a place where we could make fantastic clay sculptures ? dolls? ? in the convention.
I feel like going to Funan Mall?s Challenger store to buy the professional pen tablet intuos 5, which professional comic artists draw comic book series from, and start drawing and doodling my ideas. Then perhaps I could bring them to great design firms such as Gamersaurus Design (Email: elydis (at) gamersaurusrex.com Address: 220A Upper Thomson Road Singapore) to design a board games based on my ideas.
I did not buy anything ? because school term is coming, and I am short of money to buy back-to-school stuff. In addition, few things interest me, as I had either bought them, or find too similar to current geek stuff I or my friends own.
In addition, I find the location of the Convention a little too far from where I live, so it takes quite a big effort to come home from the convention center.
Nevertheless, this convention had been up to my expectations. I look forward to November, when I can see a new Angry Birds series and much more geek stuff on Anime Festival Asia 2012, held this November, in Singapore Expo, in the same place where I take my annual college papers.
