[First posted on my Tumblr June 26, 2016.]
I recently joined on [Tumblr] and had been wanting to do a long blog. At first I didn’t know what topic to write about but then I came up with something that I wanted to share. A band from the 80s that I love and that band is: The Psychedelic Furs.
Growing up I remember hearing a few of their songs being played by my parents (“Heaven” was the first song I heard), who liked them in the 80s and even saw The Furs live on May 20, 1987 at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, during the Midnight To Midnight tour. When I was 14 I remember hearing “Love My Way” and liked it, then in my late teens to early 20s I heard “Sister Europe” and “The Ghost In You” and liked them as well, and I put those three songs on my iPod and burned them on a CD.
But in 2014 they entered my mind and I wanted to get more into their music, so on Amazon I bought their greatest hits CD, and after listening to it a couple times, I fell in love with them. Then I got their albums Forever Now and Mirror Moves that Christmas and I loved them even more.
Last Summer was really amazing. Me and my brother saw the legendary rock band Rush at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on July 21, 2015, during their R40 tour. But something special was going to happen. Nine days later I was looking through my Twitter and I saw a tweet saying: “CONCERT ALERT: The Psychedelic Furs at the Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR September 2, 2015.” I was really ecstatic, it just blew my mind. I told my mom about it and she bought the tickets for me as a birthday present (my brother started liking The Furs too and went with me). I really couldn’t believe it, the fact I was going to see them live made me so emotional I started crying, just shocked and happy at the same time.
So August rolled by, the first of September came, and on Twitter The Psychedelic Furs tweeted how they were going to Portland the next day, and I replied to them saying: “CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!” with four hearts. On their Facebook page they talked about coming to Portland as well and I shared their post, simply just said: “AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH.” I was really excited.
On the day of the concert, something amazing happened. Early in the morning, I was in bed looking at Twitter and after I looked through my timeline, I checked the notifications and I saw that The Psychedelic Furs LIKED my tweet that I wrote the day before. I’ll never forget how I felt when I saw it, I kept repeating “No way, no way” cause I didn’t totally expect that would happen and then I cried happy tears. It was just an amazing feeling.
So later that day me and my brother listened to Midnight To Midnight on the way over and when we got to downtown Portland my heart started beating and had butterflies in my stomach cause we were getting close. After trying to find a parking spot we walked to the Crystal Ballroom and got in line. Then we went in and got to the right side of the stage but we went to the barrier which was awesome!
After opening band The Church played (known for their song “Under The Milky Way”), we waited for The Furs to come on stage, then finally the magic happened. I’ll never forget how they came. The opening song was “Heartbeat” and when the saxophone intro started, the band members were on stage first, then when the music kicked in, Richard Butler, the lead singer, came on stage. It was unbelievable, seeing him close up in person and while I was watching him sing, I thought to myself: “Oh my gosh, that’s him, that’s THE Richard Butler!” It was one of the most amazing nights I had in my entire life. I sang along and was just in Heaven the whole time.
But then after 17 songs they left the stage and the concert was over. Me and my brother went to the merchandise section and I got a t-shirt that had the Mirror Moves album cover and a remastered vinyl copy of that album that was autographed by the band members!
When we went home I went to my room and I cried tears of joy. I couldn’t believe that I saw The Psychedelic Furs live. I actually saw them. I remember that day just like if it happened recently. The memory of driving to Portland, being in line, being in the venue, the stuffy air, the lights, the excitement, and most importantly, seeing them live.
The next day after the concert I tweeted to The Furs a photo that I took and wrote: “I can’t believe I saw @pfurs live in Portland last night. With all my heart, thank you guys again so much!! Love you!” A few days later they liked that tweet and again, like the first time, I cried, knowing that they read my message and how grateful I was. But it wasn’t the last, cause months later they liked some of my tweets three more times!
After seeing them I thought to myself that if they ever tour again and come to Portland I wanted to see them again. They were so awesome live. They’re just one of those bands that you have to see again. Earlier this year they announced that they would be hitting the road again this Summer and were going to post the dates soon. That made me excited and was hoping Portland would be included.
Two months ago they finally announced the tour dates and on July 26, they will be playing in Portland at the Revolution Hall. My wish came true and so next month me and my brother are going to see them for the second time. And what’s cool is that The Church will open for them again!
It’s been two years since The Psychedelic Furs came into my life and I love them with all my heart. They are my number one favorite band right now and I wish I got into their music earlier, but better late than never.
Now I have to make a confession (get ready for this): I love The Psychedelic Furs a little more than The Smiths and (gasp!) Green Day. You heard that right, I love them more than The Smiths and Green Day, and they are bands that I really love too! I don’t know if that’s how I’m feeling right now or not, but there’s just something about The Furs. Their music, Richard Butler’s voice, everything about them. On Twitter I follow some Classic Alternative accounts and sadly they don’t cover The Furs a lot only once in a while. They cover bands/singers like The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division, David Bowie, etc., and that’s fine but what about The Psychedelic Furs? They are important too.
Well, that’s the end of my story and thank you for taking the time to read this. I also want to thank The Psychedelic Furs for coming into my life with their music and for giving me great memories. I’m so thankful I got into them two years ago. Thank you Richard and everyone so much…
