Last March I wrote a blog on [Tumblr] about my top favorite albums from The Psychedelic Furs. If you’re wondering about the title of this blog I’m not doing another list. The albums that I had listed as my most favorites are still the same, in the order I had selected. Although I will redo the list in the future because in a recent interview with Psychedelic Furs bassist Tim Butler he said that by the end of this year (After when they finish their tour that they’re currently doing) they are going to record a new album and will release it next year. I’m really excited about it and I hope it will be released very soon.
So about the title of this blog that I’m typing right now, I have another favorite album but it’s in a different approach. Forever Now is my favorite Psychedelic Furs album of all time, but recently I thought of a brilliant question. What is The Psychedelic Furs’ best album in terms of music, my favorite album from them musically, and the best music they ever wrote? Well, I have an answer to that question. My favorite Psychedelic Furs album musically is……………………………………
Book Of Days, their sixth album, released in 1989.
When I first got Book Of Days last year it was good but it wasn’t as great as their other albums. But as the months went by I started to love it. And I realized that the music in this album is so good. Like, really good. Book Of Days is one of their most underrated albums, next to Midnight To Midnight, released in 1987 (Which I really love and it’s my third favorite Furs album).
Book Of Days has the best music that The Psychedelic Furs ever wrote and recorded. I mean, I love the music in their other albums but this tops them all. The music was a return to the sound of their first two albums (The Psychedelic Furs (1980) and Talk Talk Talk (1981)) but even better in my opinion!
When Allmusic reviewed Book Of Days they said that the album didn’t have songs that would “catch your attention.” At first I agreed with them when I first got the album but now I don’t! They catch my attention now with the music! Here are the songs.
Track One: “Shine,” the opener, and in my opinion the music in this song is lighter than the rest of the songs, which are heavy and dark. I really love “Shine,” it’s my second favorite song from The Furs and after when I would listen to Book Of Days I play it again. Beautiful music and beautiful lyrics and vocals by singer Richard Butler.
Track Two: “Entertain Me.” Heavy with guitars and the ending of this song is great, where you can hear Richard singing some lyrics that to me are similar to the next song.
Track Three: “Book Of Days,” the title track. It softly opens with guitar and then the rest of the music comes on. Heavy like “Entertain Me.”
Track Four: “Should God Forget.” Really great powerful music in this. This song was a top 20 hit on the alternative rock charts (USA) in either 1989 or 1990.
Track Five: “Torch.” Has cello, acoustic guitar and bass that has a clinking sound which I love. Very soft.
Track Six: “Parade.” Two rocking guitar solos in this song. The word “parade” has been mentioned on “Should God Forget” and “Torch,” and it makes me think if that is a theme in this album, but I could be wrong.
Track Seven: “Mother-Son.” Tim Butler shines in this song. The music is just so catchy and good, and it’s one of those things that just sticks with you.
Track Eight: “House.” It opens with acoustic guitar but then the electric guitar comes on. A really awesome opener. This song reached number one on the alternative rock charts (USA) in 1990.
Track Nine: “Wedding.” Gosh, I love the music in this! It’s also one of those things that stick with you. It’s enchanting, beautiful and epic. Even though the song’s called “Wedding,” there’s nothing wedding-related in it, and that is a great mystery to me. I really wonder what the song is about.
Track Ten: The last song, “I Don’t Mine.” Great music in this too. On the first and last verses the first lyrics are “Lit like Halloween.” Book Of Days was released on Halloween 1989, so I wonder if that’s a coincidence?
Well, that’s all of the songs and thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. I really wish I could describe the music more but I’m really bad at that. All I can say is: It’s so freaking good! You have to listen to it! Book Of Days is my fifth favorite Psychedelic Furs album, but it is definitely my favorite Psychedelic Furs album musically. You definitely should check it out.
