Well, I’m back with a new blog about my favorite band, The Psychedelic Furs. If you had read my previous blogs about them, you could tell that I’m a huge fan. I’m obsessed with The Furs, and since this year will be 40 years since the band formed, I want to talk about why they are so great. Here are my reasons!
1. Their music
All I could say is that their music is just so brilliant. A blend of punk, alternative, and new wave. On their first two albums, the sound is punk and alternative, and then on their third album, Forever Now, the sound is new wave. Their soft, slow songs are also brilliant too, particularly “No Easy Street,” “No Tears,” “Torch,” “Sometimes,” “She Is Mine,” and more. There are certain sounds on their songs that just stick with you. With me the way bassist Tim Butler played on The Furs’ sixth album Book Of Days is probably some of his finest, the beginning and end of “All Of This And Nothing,” and guitarist John Ashton’s guitar solo at the end of “Forever Now,” which is freaking brilliant. That’s one of my favorite guitar solos.
No wonder bands like The Killers are influenced by The Psychedelic Furs, cause The Furs are just so amazing.
2. Singer Richard Butler
Oh my gosh, his voice!!! Richard Butler has such a lovely voice, both singing and talking. He’s one of the most greatest vocalists of all time, and right now he’s my favorite male vocalist. Even though there are other great male singers too, Richard is my favorite. There is no one like him and he is just so wonderful. Also one of the most handsome looking guys out there and so I have a crush on him, hee hee.
Richard is another reason why The Psychedelic Furs’ music is so great, cause his voice fits the music so well. Like I said, there’s no one like him.
3. Their live performances
I feel lucky to have seen them live two times (in 2015 and 2016) and they were just so amazing. I loved the energy, the music, and the way Richard Butler performed. He was just so brilliant live, and I loved the way he would bow after a song. He looked so graceful when he did that.
I also like how they interact with the audience. If there’s no barrier, Richard would shake their hands and a few times would hold their hands and sing to them. At the second concert I attended, he shook my hand four times and held my hand and sang to me. I still can’t believe he did that, it was a really nice surprise. And then Tim Butler would sing right back at you. At the second concert he sang right back at me a few times and when I was taking photos of him, he looked at me. It was really awesome.
So I guess that pretty much sums it up and I hope you enjoyed reading this. I mentioned this in one of my blogs, but I love The Psychedelic Furs a little more than The Smiths and Green Day. Don’t get me wrong, I love those bands so much but I just love The Psychedelic Furs a little more. On Twitter I follow some 80s music related accounts and they really don’t talk about The Furs that much. Also there are punk/post punk accounts too but they don’t talk about them, and that really irritates me. The Psychedelic Furs are a part of post punk and 80s music history, and I really wish people would talk about them a lot. They are such a great band.
