From the Archives: The Importance of The Psychedelic Furs

[First posted on my Tumblr September 25, 2017.]

I’m back with another blog about my favorite band. I wanted to write about The Psychedelic Furs again because recently I got music biographer Dave Thompson’s biography of them, called Beautiful Chaos, and also I again want to talk about how why they are so important and how they don’t get the recognition that they really deserve, which that’s a shame.

Having been a fan for three years now I wanted to get to know about The Furs more. All I know was that they first formed in 1977 in London, England, but I wanted to know about their beginnings, the making of their albums, and much more. For my birthday I bought Beautiful Chaos but it’s a newer edition, which was updated this year (it was first published in 2004 but it went out of print) and has new cover art. I’m currently reading the book but I’m really enjoying it so far. A must for every Furs fan.

Now for the important stuff.

I know I talked about this already on one of my previous blogs but I really, really wish that people would talk about The Psychedelic Furs more. I feel that I’m the only person in the world who does that. Heck, even on Twitter I tweeted how out of all the people on there who mention their favorite bands in their bios, I’m probably the only person who mentions Psychedelic Furs, but thankfully there’s someone from Japan who mentioned them, and that really made me happy to see.
Also on Twitter there are a lot of Punk/Post-Punk/New Wave/Classic Alternative/80s accounts and they always mention The Smiths, David Bowie, Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, etc., but not The Psychedelic Furs. Either they mention The Furs sometimes, once in a while, or sadly, never. It makes me sad, annoyed and even mad, because The Psychedelic Furs are important too just like them and are important in Punk, Post-Punk and 80s music history.

Someone made a picture and it said “The United Kingdom Musically Gifted” and it shows the map of the UK, the cities and where the bands/artists are from. I looked at London and it listed a lot of bands/artists like Kate Bush, David Bowie, etc., but there was one band that was missing, The Psychedelic Furs. How could the person who made the map forget about them??? Why????

Earlier this month The Psychedelic Furs returned to their native England to play their first UK shows in five years and they performed at the O2 Ritz in Manchester. Before and on the day of the concert I tweeted to this account called Mainly Manchester (@ ManchesterDose) and told them that The Furs were going to perform there and told them to give The Furs a shoutout. Either they didn’t see my tweets or just simply ignored them, but sadly they didn’t give a shoutout to The Furs, and that made me kind of sad.

Now you think that people who had been fans since the 80s would talk about them a lot on social media but I really don’t see any of that. No fan accounts, nothing. Like I said, I’m probably the only person who does. But I realize how brilliant and wonderful they are and their music, and they are the only band who changed my life. How could anybody, especially those accounts, forget the brilliance of The Psychedelic Furs? Their music, singer Richard Butler’s voice, everything about them.
I’m just so thankful I was able to give them my letter a couple months ago, to let them know how much I, a younger fan, appreciated their music. It is a great feeling.
