Last month I got a puppy. Yes, an adorable little black Labrador Retriever. Her name is Sabella. In the last month, I have been teaching her many different things. She has mastered "sit" and "Off" pretty well. One of the things I have noticed about her is that she loves to play with certain toys. During the time frame I am working with her, she can't have those toys. Sabella tries to get to them when working sometimes and won't focus. I find myself trying to focus her on the task at hand. Training her with ASL has been difficult, but well worth it. I clap and she looks my direction, making eye contact with me. I then am able to sign to her. She doesn't like it when I speak and likes to play deaf and ignore me. Teaching her in ASL has been very beneficial in many ways. One of them is when I lose the ability to speak. If I can't speak, then Sabella needs a method that I can use to communicate with her. She has been very good so far with training, but potty training seems to almost be a complete disaster. I have to try to remain patient even though I feel like hitting and yelling. At times I have found myself so frustrated with her that I do actually raise my voice at her. It doesn't make me feel good in the end.
Patience is important. Whether it is with a child, dog, or other person. When you exercise patience, you are helping both yourself and the other side to communicate better and more effectively. Being patient in both speech and action is important. As I am learning with Sabella, I have found myself learning lots of patience. Before I got Sabella, my patience was very little. Now I have better patience with myself and others. Sabella has helped me realize that patience is important in more ways than one.
I am trying to be more patient with myself as well. Sabella has been teaching me that if I can't be patient with myself, then I can't be patient with her. Sometimes stepping back and taking some deep breaths is a good option. For me i find this to be very true. It helps me relax and start over in a clear mind set.
Try being patient in the little things and you will be greatly rewarded.
