Those That Live By The Gun Will Die By the Gun

Business has been booming lately for the local gun shops. I drive past one on the way to and from therapy and every time I go by it their parking lot is full. In case you don't know what kind of business it is, the sign out front has GUNS in large red letters.

Now I've never been in the place but I am kind of curious to see who goes there and what are they buying in such numbers. If I didn't know any better, if I was a conspiracy nut, I'd say this whole Sandy Hook thing was done on purpose just so that the NRA and gun dealers could increase business. Hey, isn't that what they say about 9-11? If a government can be so callous to murder 3,000 civilians then 26 or so should be no big deal. For the record I don't believe 9-11 was anything other than an Al-Quaida conspiracy nor do I believe that Sandy Hook was anything other than the actions of one mentally troubled individual.

The big reason that we need so many guns, we are told by NRA and Second Amendment supporters, is not only to protect against mass shooters like this one but to also protect against government tyranny. The problem, they say, isn't that there are so many guns out there, the problem is that there aren't enough guns out there.

They cite history and say that one of the first things that dictators do is disarm their people. Fair enough. But I remember the riots of the 1960's. What did the people of Detroit do in 1967 when the National Guard rolled into town? There were plenty of guns in Detroit at that time. But it didn't prevent the National Guard from coming in and declaring martial law. Detroit was a pretty quiet town in the days that followed. My point is, if their worst fears came true and the goverment did become a dictatorship it doesn't matter how many households are armed or not armed. In fact, I'd say the Second Amendment is somewhat obsolete in that matter. If the government wanted to impose martial law on its citizens, it could do so very easily. And please don't tell me that the military would rise up against it and refuse to fire on civilians. I remember Kent State in 1968 when National Guardsmen fired on four unarmed anti-war protestors and killed them. And there are many, many more incidents in American history where the military turned on civilians. I do not recall one instance where guns ever saved the day for those civilians. I do not recall any instance where the National Guard was driven out of a city where it had been sent to put down an insurrecton. Not one. You're going to stop tanks and drones with something you just bought from GUNS? Please. That's like bows and arrows versus rifles.

Recently I heard about a shooting in New Mexico where the young man killed his parents and his brother (or was it sister?) and then turned himself into police. Apparently he was planning to end the day by going to a mall and doing a little target practice on shoppers but changed his mind. Now here's what's mind-boggling. HE GOT THE GUNS BY GOING TO THE UNLOCKED CLOSET WHERE THEY WERE KEPT.

What in God's name is going on here? Didn't his parents watch the news? Why weren't those guns locked up instead of stashed in a closet?

Oh, I know. You can't lock up a gun because that defeats the purpose. If you are keeping a gun for home protection, the bad guys don't call ahead and say, unlock your gun because we are coming. So if the gun is locked in a gunsafe, then you might as well not even have it.

Jesus said that those who live by the sword die by the sword. I think now he'd update that to those who live by the gun die by the gun.
