In dog training/behavior work, at least in the online world, the subject of punishments/aversives is the center of a heated and and nasty war. Opponents of aversives, people who believe that you should never ever be nasty to a dog, will, with no apparent sense of irony, unleash mountains of nastiness against their intellectual opponents.
The ever thoughtful Ian Dunbar wrote an interesting article reminding us that the subject of punishment/aversives and rewards is complex, not simplistic.
