    5 gallons of maple tree juice today. Looks like the temperature is going to hold in the right range for a while, so tree juice shall flow.

    Brought in another 2 gallons of tree juice yesterday. Today, it's back to 17F and too cold until Monday to get more.

    I got the first bit from the maple trees today. About a gallon of juice from 12 trees. It's just the start.

    Snow has melted enough that the trip to the trees is more of a trudge now than an epic journey.

    The snow is doing that thing where it melts down during the day, then freezes at night so it gets flater and flater, and slicker and slicker.

    No tree juice yet, though.

    Tapped 10 maples today. I have 2 more to go, but ran out of buckets.

    The snow is still high. I should have worn shoes (snowshoes), but didn't want to bother. I regret not bothering.

    I think that tomorrow it will be time to start tapping maple trees. Last year I tried tapping two trees. This year I have 12 marked and ready to go.

    Random thought: A 300 year old Stradivarius violin just sold for 11 million dollars.

    That's one heck of a fiddle!

    There was a bloke in Melbourne years ago that made violins that often got compared to Stradivarius. The secret was in the wood. He had gone to Gaza and from a lot of buildings that had been destroyed he bought doors. He bought dozens of doors from collapsed buildings and shipped them back to Australia. Some of that timber was over 2000 years old.

    If I remember the Stradivarius violins were built from wood that was cut at a particular time where due to some unique weather events, the grain of the wood was tighter. I think also that they haven't been able to replicate the glue used either.

    I heard a tale that Stradivarius mixed ground quartz into the varnish. This may be just a tall tale though.

    Now I have a beautiful harp, but I'm stuck holiday traveling so all I've been able to do it tune and a little lite strumming. Sounds very good, though!

    What size will it be?

    A lap harp with 29 strings, which means it is a LARGE lap harp. 28+ strings is generally a floor harp (sits on the floor when played, as opposed to being held on the lap).

    Harps are not standardized (like a violin or a guitar), so they are more identified by the number of strings than by other identifying features.

    Thread 'What made you sad today?'

    Have been paying attention to the real estate listings from the area I grew up in. Businesses left long ago, there are no doctors left and now only a small medical clinic, the people who remained were all older and retired.
