    Less Visible Fidgets

I make fidgets out of straws and keep one or two in my pockets. I can fidget with them with my hand in my pocket or just with my hand in my lap or at my side. They are quiet and small enough to hide. Here's how to make it: How to make a straw fidget. I also "mentally" fidget when I can't...

Responding to my cousin's diagnosis (vent)

I think that's the right approach in this case. Good for you for reaching out! It seems like there's always an adjustment period after a diagnosis - it takes time to accept and internalize it. Your cousin is lucky to have you to support her through it.

I think I am on to a solution.

I love the grey rock approach. I don't think I'm very good at it ... yet, but I really like the idea.

It’s a fictional glyph from a book series called, “The Stormlight Archive”, by my current favorite author, Brandon Sanderson. It means “Bridge Four”, the name of a team in the books.

Ups and downs in energy, brain capacity and creativity

My mental/thinking capacity depends on one thing only - how much sleep I got. My emotional capacity is a crapshoot. In the book series, The Stormlight Archive, there is a character blessed/cursed with a mental capacity that changes every day. He can be a genius one day and a drooling idiot the...

Don't Be Shy To Introduce Yourself

For me a diagnosis was liberating! It meant that I didn't have to try to function like everyone else, because I truly am different. One trite example is sleep. So many of my coworkers seem to get by fine if they don't get enough sleep - they just have some coffee and get to work. I absolutely...

Don't Be Shy To Introduce Yourself

Welcome, @jny! I hope you find this forum as welcoming and helpful as I have. Re: conversations, I made this to show what goes through my head in social situations. It's meant to look funny, but it's also 100% true.

How do some of you feel when an interest ends

I feel a little guilty about dropping a hobby sometimes, because I usually leave my latest project unfinished. I have to consciously remind myself that the hobby is for my enjoyment and I am free to change it or drop it if I enjoy something else more.

    Socializing within special interest

If I'm in an environment where I can share my enthusiasms with others who are genuinely interested, I think that the autistic trait that disappears is "fear of doing wrong in a social situation." - that is the same masking that other posters have mentioned.

    STV News

I heard a security expert share wonderful perspective on scary news articles like this: "You should never worry about something that is reported in the news, because if it's in the news, it's rare enough to be considered news." That is, you don't hear news reports about fender benders and...
