What are your Christmas traditions?

Lutefisk washed down with aquavit and beer, that's Christmas. It's not for everyone, you have to be brave to enjoy it. :) My parents always had that as a part of the Christmas dinner. Lutefisk is dried cod or ling soaked in lye for days, until it turns gelatinous. Some say the aquavit is there to get the taste of lutefisk out of your mouth.

That's very different than salt cod that you have to soak in water for days, something I've eaten before. I've tried lutefisk and it's not for the faint-hearted.

I love Christmas because I love buying gifts for the people I love. I enjoy doing it. But this year we've been having money difficulties so I've been unable to afford to buy Christmas gifts. We'll get some money on the 23rd but that's too near Christmas day so Amazon won't get it delivered in time for Christmas - which means I'll have to face the busy stores, and believe you me, the stores are absolutely manic near Christmas.

I remember quite a few years ago now I was with my friend in Tesco on Christmas eve, and the store was so busy, there were queues all the way down each aisle, containing about 20-30 people in each queue to every check-out, and then add all the shoppers that weren't queuing yet, it was like sardines in there. Every aisle had a 2-year-old having a major temper tantrum because it wanted a toy but were too young to understand that tomorrow was Christmas day when they'll get lots of toys. I still don't know why big stores don't have crèches where parents can leave their toddlers supervised whilst doing their shopping, because the supermarket just isn't really a suitable place for young kids. Did you know that you're more likely to face temper tantrums from kids in supermarkets than from kids in a preschool setting? It's true.

Anyway, back to the point. My friend is NT but she actually had a panic attack in there that day. She'd gone all pink in the face and began shaking and had to sit down. Then she was nearly sick. I silently panicked in case she was ill, but after we came out she said she wasn't ill, she'd just had a panic attack because she got too overwhelmed in the store with all the people and kids everywhere. Funnily enough I didn't actually get too anxious in there that day, although the screaming kids were driving me a bit insane. Every parent seems to have a kid of the terrible two's age whenever you go into a busy supermarket.

Finding a Christmas tree is a nice tradition. Wandering around in the snow until you see the perfect tree. My dad used to take me with him to find a tree when I was very young, maybe that's part of why I like it so much. It's a nice trip and a nice tradition. 🎄

We make Xmas plans and my wife's parents blow them up in some manner. Fourth year in a row. There are hurt feelings this year as I told my wife I am done with her parents and willing to divorce over any further intrusions by them into my life.
