I don't recall reading that one - should I remedy this? It might have been in Steinbeck's "The Red Pony" which is really gruesome, or in "My Friend Flicka" and its sequels, which I read when I was 12. :)

@Callistemon if you like Florida, off-grid living, Pulitzer winners, and slightly gruesome novels about pet deer, you'll like Rawlings' book.

I'll see if the library has it. Looked up that film link though and that looks right up our street - the plot sounds hilarious already and the reviews are excellent. Brett even recognises some of the actors!
