One, that guy shouldn’t be your friend. Two, try to ignore what other people say. Every person is going to say something, but you decided whether they are worth listening to.

Or maybe he's being honest...I would have just worded it differently:

"That's a good effort, maybe you' do better next time," or "I can see you're improving. it almost looks like the object depicted this time."
Metalhead

I would get another ban here if I said what I wanted to say about that rude person here.

or I would say "Dont give up, you'll get better one day. Van gogh was crap too, and never sold a painting in his lifetime. And then sliced his ear off and shot himself. So what if everybody thinks it's bad. Maybe one day after you die, people will like it. Just like van gogh. You will be vindicated."

Something like that maybe... Not " worst painting he's ever seen." Thats just plain wrong.

Thanks @Metalhead and @Homulilly . It was just particularly upsetting because I was an art student at one point and I had to switch majors. I kept getting picked apart and laughed at because my art was a different style than some of the more "traditional" students, therefore everyone hated it and said it was terrible.
L
Luca
I'm still very hurt from that so every time someone tells me my art is bad and ugly and I should stop making art, I just get upset and cry. Obviously art is subjective and I shouldn't care what people say if I like doing it, but no one likes to be told that they suck at their special interests.

Other people are idiots. Just keep doing what you're doing.

@Slim Jim I certainly hope he was not being honest, because it took me over six hours to paint it and I got paid $350 for it. If the person who asked me to paint it doesn't like it, she can have her money back and I don't have it in me to re-do it.

I'm actually a very good at drawing, painting. I've only ever been complimented. It's one of the few natural talents I have.
L
Luca
I'm usually complimented too, at least recently, but I was just so taken aback by how hurtful that comment was that I just don't feel good about myself at all right now.
Slim Jim

I personally, I dont think I would ever "paint for cash." Because well.... I dont want to ... and I have terrible work ethic.
Slim Jim

Hey if you know it's good, it's good. Objectively speaking, You should be able to appraise that yourself.
L
Luca
I normally refuse to, but this person really liked one of my drawings and she kindly asked if I could paint her dog. She didn't have to pay me but she did. Seeing how this went, I don't think I will allow anyone to pay me or buy my art anymore.
Slim Jim

If you're upset, maybe because you believe they are right. If you Knew in your heart you were excellent. There would be no doubt. And no worry.
L
Luca
I actually do think it's good, that's why I'm so upset lol. I'm like really offended that he would say that about something that I worked really hard on, that I like, and that other people have told me that they like.

Well, I mean, I don’t completely agree with the “art is subjective” POV, but what happened to you in college also sounds very odd. Some art schools have a solid take on what “fine art” should be and talks bad about everything else, and that’s the kind of thing I really hate.
Homulilly
Homulilly
Art schools in general start training you to be realistic tho, because it’s easier for you to learn basic principles when there’s something realistic to reference to. But it becomes a problem when they expect that of everyone endlessly.
Slim Jim
Slim Jim
Well If you worked really hard on it. And you feel deep inside you did a good job. Then just take it for what it's worth, a disgruntled customer griping.

"Thanks for your input. But No refunds."

Luca
Ok, I called my best friend and woke him up to talk about this, and he told me that the painting is “objectively good” (even though I can see that I kind of messed up on one part. Oops!) But that doesn’t mean I’m not still angry about what my other friend said… oh well, tomorrow I’ll find out if my client likes it. Sigh

Honestly I think mistakes are what give most art its character and appeal to begin with
