Don't send any money to anyone. What do they mean with "commission them"? Remember that lots of people will say and do pretty much anything to steal your money.

Commission as in: sometimes artists will open up services where a client will pay a set price for the artist (usually via PayPal) to draw something for them (usually provided via reference) but can also be done for free of charge if the both agree to draw something for each other.

Usually the client will reach out to the artist if they like their art/been following the artist on socials for a while, not the artist reaching out to customers trying to get them to commission art

Sorry, I'm a little old and confused :) Someone contacted you to ask if you wanted to pay them to draw something? Or if you could draw something for them?
mysterionz

@Forest Cat the first option, aka “someone contacted me asking if I wanted to pay them to draw something.”

I see, but if you send money to them, is there any guarantee that you will actually get something back? And do you want to pay to have them draw something? 1300 dollars sounds crazy high, don't send 1300 to anyone.

Oh forget that! Don't even respond to them. It's a scam, big time. Instead of sending cash, perhaps you could tell them about a new handy place they could store their paintbrushes?

@Forest Cat for this particular person, 70/30 they’ll deliver, likely keeping the $$ for themselves. Normally artists have their delivery time mentioned so the customer can know when to expect what they paid for. If for any reason the illustration fails to be delivered, a refund can be issued but some artists have a history of not giving customers refunds.

I once heard of an art commission scam story where ann artist never delivered anything to their customer and instead went on an art shopping spree. This was found out after photos of their new art supplies (one being a very expensive set of COPIC markers) was posted to their social medias.

I don't know what you should do but I want to say be careful with your money. You work for that money. A friend of mine lost almost $600 dollars to an internet thief, I very much would like to get a hold of that person. There's so much scamming and thieving these days. Be careful.

Yeah this sounds like a scam. I never heard of anyone DM'ng someone to commission them. Don't send them your money.

To put it simply: The only reason you should be paying someone for a commission to draw you something is because YOU want them to do it, have an idea for what you want them to draw, and have shopped around to make sure the price is fair.

And even then, you should be checking around before you choose someone to make sure that someone is known to actually always complete the work and hand over the finished product.

I had someone do that to me, not to do with art but something of some sort but I just blocked them
