From what I've heard, Brooklyn is pretty diverse, far more so than Manhattan where everybody is either wealthier than God or poorer than a mouse. Couldn't you maybe wander around in someplace like Flatbush or Crown Heights? When I lived in San Francisco I found that a stroll through Chinatown helped with depression.
