Is it possible for an Aspie to attain the social skills of a NT?

I can be very extroverted at times but I prefer being so with friends and family I'm comfortable with. Or talking to people about topics I am comfortable with. I hate small talk with strangers or people I barely know, and I'm not interested in meeting people I know I'll never see or talk to...

    Am I an aspie?

Were you ever found to be intellectually gifted in school? Just curious, because when people are doubly exceptional it can be very difficult to fully understand. You sound quite a bit like me and I am both Aspie and gifted. Look it up online and see if perhaps you better fit into this category...

How Do I Help My Young Adult Son????

What are his obsessions and interests? Most if not all Aspies have such interests which drive them. The great thing about these interests is that, no matter how unimportant they may be to NT society, you don't have to justify their value to him. Currently you are having a problem justifying the...

    Aspies and Art

Hi everyone! I am curious as to how my Aspie brothers and sisters connect artistically. I would love to know some of the following items, but feel very free to express yourself as you wish to discuss how art functions in your lives. I will answer the questions for myself at the end of this post...

Does This Drive anyone else Mad!

My wife often tells me how I feel; angry, upset, etc. when I'm not at all. I am accused of yelling sometimes as well when I am not. It doesn't make me upset anymore because we are working through the Aspie/NT communication differences, but it used to make us argue like crazy.

The Figure of Speech That You Dislike The Most

How about when people say, "Southern (Northern, etc.) accent"? That bothers me a lot. It is a Southern dialect, not accent. An accent is when someone who does not natively speak your language pronounces the language with vowels, consonants and inflections that are familiar to the native...

Desperately seeking answers about adult Aspergers

Do you need an official diagnosis, or are you just curious? Because if there is no specific reason to have an official diagnosis then I would say stick to self-diagnosis. There is nothing "wrong" with being an Aspie, which is what it sounds like you are, and you can learn and connect a lot...

    Aspergers and Religion

Well I apologize for starting a major debate here on AspiesCentral. I very much did not intend for this to go so far. As I had stated earlier, I am a UMC pastor (Christian Protestant) and obviously this is my interest and one of my obsessions. I am very grateful for the openness of everyone to...

    Aspergers and Religion

Yes to clarify, my intent was to survey my Aspie brothers and sisters to see what their spiritual paths were, if any. Perspectives of agnostics/atheists/etc are very much welcomed, but yes the judgmental words were not my intention. When you say you have no "religion" or that you believe in...

    Hobbies

My hobbies and interests (obsessions?) change frequently and I tend to move between them often.

    The Reasons Behind Interests

I love to share and talk about my hobbies and interests with other people, but they are rarely so deeply interested as I am. I guess I'm less likely to want to partake in hobbies with others, but if they are interested as I am, then I'm all for it! So I guess I would agree that most of my hobbies...

    Surviving uni/college with AS?

I stayed in my hometown for college, which was good because I lived at home where I was understood. I had some friends from high school, all who stayed in town, so I didn't have to try to make new friends. So I could go to class and do the school thing, then leave and do whatever else. And I...

    Ambition vs. Social akwardness

I very much am better at talking to people at my office and in my place of work. I am in my element, and everything makes more sense to me there. Outside of my element makes for a much more difficult time socially, especially among peers. I never know when to look at people, especially walking...

    "nt" dating an "as" male?

I second much of what tarragon said. We Aspies can get very defensive and it is hard to trust others. If we do trust you then you have earned a loyal companion for life. I have an Aspie friend and he is very suspicious of people like I am. We became good friends even before either of us knew we...

I know I'm an Aspie because......

People don't understand my train of thought and misunderstand my intentions all the time.

    What are your stims?

I squint a lot when it is not necessary, I have a really hard time sitting still for long, and I bite or chew my nails frequently. My other stims change over time, sometimes daily or weekly, so I don't have any one thing I do for years at a time.

    Missing Details?

Well just to share, I am also not good at details unless the details surround my latest obsession. In those cases I am extremely detail oriented. But I tend to think about the big picture, and I can definitely relate to you in missing details. Over time hopefully you will catch them more often.

    Aspergers and Religion

Wow, so many comments! Thanks everyone for sharing! If I can see one common thread in these posts it would be the emphasis on mutual respect and peace. As a Christian Aspie myself, I tend to take biblical teachings at face value. Ergo, if I am supposed to love all people, then dammit I'm going...

    Seeking advice

So when I discovered I was an Aspie a few weeks ago I told my wife. We've been married almost a year now. Her reaction: "yeah, I know. What are you making for dinner?" LOL! Well I see a lot of people don't get that reaction, and she's a saint for it. However, that's kind of the right attitude...

    Hey

When I was 16 I had a really hard time understanding the social dynamics surrounding relationships (romantic). I did understand others' emotions or motives, but I lacked empathy, the ability to feel what they were going through. So I was actually good at helping my friends through rough patches...
