During this Pandemic, I've watched people whom I help (They are physically disabled), deal everyday to a boredom we able bodied people have had delivered to us.

I decided to scope out online resources for those who do not want to, or cannot, socialize in person.

One of those resources that have had a degree of success for those who are handicapped is an online place called 'Second Life'.

I am rather versed in computers and with an ease I learned in but a few months lots of the ins and outs of that and about Firestorm (a program that supports second life). It's quite a place to use your imagination, and even learn to build and create.

I signed on prior to my diagnosis of Aspergers, and in hindsight I now see that there are groups on Second Life that meet for those on the spectrum, one of which meets on Wednesdays.

How many of you have signed into/created an avatar on Second Life? I sign in to support the people I have helped, but it's rather cool/wouldn't mind showing this to others!

"...an online place called 'Second Life'. "

Second Life - Wikipedia
'In many ways, Second Life is similar to massively multiplayer online role-playing games; nevertheless, Linden Lab is emphatic that their creation is not a game: "There is no manufactured conflict, no set objective" '

This?
Or something else with the same name?

Yes, It's what you quoted; I'd say it's more of a 3D Chat Room.

And most do, of course, Role Play, as Role Play (or RP) doesn't strictly have to have any adventure or conflict elements in order to be considered as such.

I used it briefly about a year ago via the Firestorm client (Plus I knew someone who I think worked on it or something like that), but I kinda fell off of it.

Aye, there's a variety of things sorta like this out there.

The one I'm now familiar with is VRChat.

It looks kinda like this:

Yes that's me, I stood and posed awkwardly in front of a mirror there. I'm not sure what that green floaty thing is though, it only shows up in that particular world.

Anyway, while you can run around and meet lots of random people in VRChat, I'll be using it mostly to connect with certain specific people (and fortunately you can enter any given world as a seperate invite-only instance, which facilitates that sort of purpose). That seems the best use to me. Actually going into public populated zones is... stressful. Lots of random internet jerks running all over the place, some definitely trying to cause trouble. And I'm not exactly all that interested in dealing with randoms.

A lot of stuff to see in there. Aside from the usual aspects of getting avatars and whatnot there's a bazillion different screwball worlds in there full of who knows what. And it's a very different thing to experience these in VR, I tell ya that. The place in the screenshot is relatively normal.

Like much of VR, there's certainly a lot of therapeutic potential here, too.

These are some of the builds I did... and yeah that is a working pool table in one of those photos. This person 'bought' land and I added all that you see in the images. It's not a game, more so it is a place to explore other lands that others have built/developed, and a way to socialize. I am looking to put a few dogs on a parcel that one of my clients gave me. I have a house, beach, gazebo (not the ones in the pics above) and a couple of horses. It's a lot more creative than I thought it would be... pretty nifty.

And tada... this is an image of my place (view of the living room area) that's my avatar you see standing there. Only in second life can I have a Picasso.. lol. All furniture and objects are interactive.

I have had an account on second life since its debut, although have never had much involvement with it. Too vast and difficult to socialize in, at least to me. I much preferred and spent more time in the live online version of URU. Created by Cyan, it was an offshoot of the Myst games that debuted in 2007, if I am recalling correctly. It was a Communal puzzle game that was a bit ahead of its time and ultimately failed because its ambition far exceeded its fan base, but oh my goodness, I spent almost all my time on it when I was not working. You could view the game in either 1st or third person and. Well, it was better than any online game I have ever experienced or am likely to experience again.

So much so that I discovered that the code was sold to the Valve Corporation (STEAM) and apparently the online game is back and available. I have yet to check it out, but am eager to explore.

I still have my account on 2nd Life, but I do not go there much.

Sounds like something interesting to explore!?

Well if anyone wants to explore that source of 'amusement' do let me know... I would be happy to show ya the ropes and you can hang out at my build before moving onto exploring the rest of the continents on Second Life!
