A group of suburban footy players helped save the life of an autistic teenager at a beach in Sorrento on Saturday.

Around a dozen Balwyn players on pre-season camp helped rescue the boy who became stuck after a weather change.

Balwyn skipper Rennie Gilchrist joined the Hot Breakfast this morning and told us all about it.

“On Saturday we had our pre-season camp, which was about four and a half hours slogging away in the sand at Sorrento back beach, carrying tires and ropes and stuff up hills” Gilchrist said.

“At about 11:30, so about three and a half hours into our session, there was a cry for help from a lady on the beach.

“We sorta looked out and there was a young kid probably about 15, 16 sort of floating out 100 metres off shore and the boys sort of rolled their sleeves up and everyone jumped in the water, about 10 blokes jumped in the water and swum out and the rest of sort of walked around on to the rocks.

“We got out there and eventually grabbed him and ushered him back into shore which was good.

They used footies as flotation device to help bring the young fella back to shore.

“Some of the boys ran around the side and kicked the footies in the water so the kid could hold on to the footy and float as he pushed himself back into the shore.”

The club posted on Facebook about the incident:
