A New Kind of Suffering for Me

I was trying various medications in the hopes of improving anxiety, as I've posted about here in the past. I tried Zoloft, and it caused unbearable akathisia. I stopped taking it, and the akathisia lasted three more weeks.

But when it went away, I was left with terrible depression. It's typical depression like I've experienced much before, but there's one symptom that's new to me. It feels like my brain hurts, like it's bleeding or at least bruised. I've been scared of taking another medication so I've been trying to treat myself for two months now but have failed. The only thing that lessens the brain pain is Gabapentin, but I've developed a tolerance to that by now.

But the purpose of this thread isn't to complain about the suffering, it's to find out if anyone else has ever experienced anything that sounds remotely like what I'm describing with the brain pain. It feels like my head should opened up in surgery, and my brain should be treated in some physical way.

I was reading up on Zoloft, and some people have complained of sharp stabbing pains in their head. And a lot of people suffer from headaches with this medication.

Just the same, sorry you are going thru this. Have you tried cold pack or hear pack in the area you feel pain?

Yet it's one of the most prescribed antidepressants that is said to be one of the most effective and with the least side-effects. I've tried all of the "best" medications, and now I'm going to try some of the "worst." I should have known by now that it would all be backwards for me.

Stress of the nerves in the neck can also cause pain in the head. Have you considered acupuncture? But they need to be very experienced and it does take a couple of sessions, and insurance may cover it. Some practitioners do treat depression.

My daughter had a cracking jaw, TMJ, and she went for two sessions, told me it wasn't working, but l think it helped because she had less severe cracking after that, she just was getting lazy as a teenager. And it eventually ended.

I do have that problem sometimes, but that's something different. This pain feels deeper than any kind of head pain. It feels like the pain is inside my head, like the brain itself is throbbing. Someone on another forum said that akathisia is a sort of damage to the brain, and I just need to recover from that damage with time.

I've been on and off Zoloft for the past 10 years, and the only side effects it has is making me want to go to the loo more often - which is not a bad thing, because I otherwise have difficulty keeping myself regular - and occasional brain zaps. But nothing too serious.

Do the doctors make you aware of the fact that you are essentially the subject of medical experiments when you take those pills?
