A re-introduction

Hi, I posted on here a few weeks ago without a formal diagnosis. But I wanted to post again now that I have gotten a formal diagnosis. Honestly, I feel so happy. I feel a bit weird and also a bit annoyed that it took 23 years and nobody picking up on anything for me to get a diagnosis, but I'm so happy that I have validation for the things about me that didn't make sense. Things started coming out more in college and now in my job and I'm glad now that I can access the right resources for help if I need it. I am diagnosis with ASD high functioning, would have classified as aspergers in the DSM-IV.

Welcome to AC! Many of us got diagnosed as adults. A couple decades ago not many people in the general public were aware of high functioning autism. A couple decades before that, seeking mental health treatment for a child meant that child would never live a normal life.

I often wonder how my life would have been different if I had been diagnosed as a child, but I can't blame my parents for not knowing the signs of HFA. Even today many medical doctors (i.e. pediatricians) don't know that ASD includes way more than the stereotypical, classic symptoms.

Many of us share in your frustrations, but try not to blame those who raised you. I'm glad you have a diagnosis now and can move forward with more confidence. Glad to have you on the site.

Hi Loulou. Welcome to AC. I am not sure I want to be diagnosed, although I feel certain that I am an Aspie.

I am glad that you are feeling better. This site will help you even more with lots of information and nice people.

Interesting, why aren't you sure you want a formal diagnosis? I will be honest, I was a little afraid of what if I didn't get diagnosed, like they said no you don't fit the criteria, then I would feel lost all over again.

I am hesitant about an official diagnosis because there seems to be an increasing climate of hostility towards people who are known to have Aspergers or Autism. I consider this to be a harbinger of an attempt by those with money and power to gradually convince the general population to blame disabled and other minorities for problems. I consider this to be part of a plan to kill people and burn their bodies, for a population reduction.

I am a conspiracy buff in some areas, in case you want to ignore the paragraph above. It does not matter much to me whether people agree with me or not on the subject.

Some types of work make it hard to earn a living if you are known to have Aspergers or Autism. Some kinds might be better to have it known if u can get reasonable accommodations needed in order to work efficiently.

Well you don't have to tell anyone when you have an official diagnosis, I haven't told anyone yet, will not be telling my parents or employers, probably just my boyfriend.

That might be possible for you, but not me, since I am on a government program that takes away that kind of privacy.

I am not sure you are even safe. It would be easy to pass a law that requires medical professionals to report such a diagnosis, just as they do seizures or epilepsy so a driver's license can be revoked.

Some professionals would not cooperate if they knew it would be a problem for you, but it might be hard to get that before any danger is obvious.

Those diagnoses must be made public because they are dangerous to others if someone has one and is driving or something. If you have HFA there is no danger to others. Plus I think things are going in the opposite direction, people more accepting of people with things like ASD.

I'm quite sure that even the government cannot demand to find out any diagnoses. Maybe they could require any doctors you are seeing to write a letter of clearance or something but that doesn't disclose what you have. If someone wants to fire me because I'm autistic, you know that's their loss because I'm a great employee even with the things that I don't do so well

Wrong about the government and medical information. This is not only my opinion, but a fact that I have personal experience with. It does not directly affect you now, so you are probably safe for now.

I understand about the rationale on the driving stuff. I was not arguing about it. I simply mentioned it because most people already know about it. If medical reporting is required in something that seems to make sense now, it could be expanded easily.

I am not intending to bother you with this information, so feel free to ignore it.
