Hi! My name is Scott and I've been lurking here for the last 2 month and I just decided to setup an account today. I am 44 years old and got diagnosed with asperger's 2 years ago. I live off disability and spend most of my time tinkering and building things in my back yard shop. I am not married, don't go to parties and I can't get a job, not because I can't do the work. But because I can't do interviews and resumes. And even if I do get a job, it won't last very long because I just can't get along with someone there. I had to drop out of high school because the bullying got so bad.

Before I learned about asperger's. I always though that I was a typical nerd/geek and that's why I always had social problems( Anyone watch "Revenge of the nerds" in 1984?) and I was a social outcast because of that. But when I started going to all the various nerd/geek clubs. I started to realize that I was still having the same social problems. I always figures that someday, I would just learn to/outgrow this. But now I am in my forties and I still haven't made progress with it. Of course, it doesn't help when a psychiatrist drops the bomb on you and tell to that your social problems are cause by this thing call asperger's and there is no cure for it. I just don't get it. How can a simple psychological issue cause such difficulty in socializing. I am in good healh and have even had brain scans done and they show perfectly normal. I mean, to put it simply. socializing seem to be my biggest problem in life.

Welcome aboard. This is a very friendly community, filled with folks who have very similar experiences. Hope you enjoy the forums. Best wishes.

Hi & Welcome,
I hope you can have more success socializing with other Aspies.

Welcome to AC, FreeDiver!

I can relate...I used to say it didn't matter that I didn't really like to mix with people, but wow it sure does, especially at "work"---where most of the work seems to be about making other people feel at ease! Nonetheless, socializing is possible for most, even if we have to be a bit more structured/conscious/thoughtful about it.

Take your time, I'll see you around the threads.

cheers,
A4H

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't get along very well in places like offices either, and my solution was to become self-employed. It's a lot easier to socialise online, and I'm sure you'll fit right in here :)

Hi there. I actually worked in food service for a while, drive through specifically, and man it was a nightmare. People can be so mean sometimes just because they are the ones holding the cash. I'm lucky enough to have rich parents, so I quit and focussed on school. As of now I'm trying to learn how to write, although I'm still holding out hope that a degree in Latin will get me a day job.
