An Introduction

Minty

Active Member
Hi, everyone. I'm Minty, and I'm autistic. The clinic where I was tested didn't go into specifics about what sort of autism I have, and I'm under the impression that the DSM-V got rid of the "sub-genres" and lumped everything together as just plain ol' autism.

I'm 23, living with my grandparents, and diagnosed for less than a year. I got my diagnosis in April in hopes of getting disability accommodations and proving to my family that I wasn't just "a little different." I made it all the way through college without ever knowing, though I suspected it since I was 13 or so, and I was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety along the way. I don't think either one of those is wrong, but they weren't the actual root cause.

My hobbies include: video games, making neurotypical people angry by headcanoning every character I like as autistic like me, and Star Wars.

Welcome

Have you bought your tickets to The Last Jedi yet?

Oh, yeah, of course. (How did I miss this?) It's the first Star Wars premiere I've been able to go to, since I joined the fandom fairly recently and wasn't able to make it to Rogue One.

Hi & Welcome,
Insomnia is common too I think. What is 'Headcanoning'?

Welcome, @Minty! :)
My hobbies include: video games, making neurotypical people angry by headcanoning every character I like as autistic like me, and Star Wars.
Are these only Star Wars characters or do you do it with some characters from other fandoms as well?
What is 'Headcanoning'?
"Headcanons" are ideas or interpretations of fictional characters or universes usually made by fans. The "canon" is what is actually shown or described in the book/show etc. Headcanons can be supported by hints in the canon that are then interpreted by the fan or someone makes up ideas for a background story about something etc.
For example, there could be a character who shows traits of autism in a show, but it is never actually stated that this character is autistic. Then someone might headcanon the character as autistic based on the shown traits/hints. It is only a headcanon and not canon though because it isn't "verified" within the fictional universe itself, i. e. it is never mentioned that the character is autistic in canon.

Thanks for swooping in with that definition, @Nightingale121. I'm casually in a lot of fandoms, but Star Wars is my big special interest right now, and it's really easy to find characters to identify with in such an enormous canon.

Star Wars, video games, and games about Star Wars - more meaningful to me than 98% of the things normal people care about. It's as if the SW universe wasn't so much created by Lucas as stumbled upon & discovered in all its glory and then gifted to the enlightened of our universe/time to explore & marvel at. It's lost none of the allure it had for me when I was eight.
