Another Storm

We have another storm headed our way. Nicole doesn't look as bad as Ian, but still could be destructive. Right now it looks like it will hit me around 8 pm Wednesday. I've barely gotten things back to normal after Ian, so this is kind of panic making. Not the storm. But the huge physical and psychological demands of preparation, watching the forecase, making decisions about how much to do.

My husband usually bears the brunt of the preparations. But again, he is away. He went on a backpacking trip he has been preparing for for almost a year, then he got sick on the trail and it turns out he has covid. So he is stuck up on North Carolina with his parents, under quarantine.

I also have due dates for work related things and if I have to spend all this time on the hurricane prep, I will fall behind on the due dates.

This storm is headed to the east coast of Florida. Ian hit on the west coast. But I am in the middle, so get it from both directions. I'm afraid it won't be bad enough to get extensions on the due dates.

Well, thanks for listening. I have to keep my head and not get into the giving-up-I-can't-do-it stuff.

I'm considerably close to the east coast, but not right on it thankfully. I hope everybody does OK this time around. :(

Be safe as you can! So far away in New England, I was just going to offer distraction, but it sounds like you are more in need of focus at the moment.

Either way, may Nicole be gentle and go out to sea swiftly. Saving some compassion for your husband, too. Gosh, that’s disappointing to have such a long awaited trip disrupted by illness.

I’m in central Florida as well and I have work on the days nicole will hit FL (late Wednesday morning to mid afternoon/Thursday evening)

Info tidbit: Nicole is currently a subtropical storm. A subtropical storm has characteristics of both tropical storms (the minimum requirement for a tropical depression to be assigned a name) and an extratropical storm (other weather phenomena like blizzards and Nor’easters). Thankfully, subtropical storms are mostly weak and often reach the equivalent of a Category One hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Windscale.

Wow. I didn't realize this. We can't go thru anymore damage, l haven't fixed my roof yet. I have to stand on my roof waving a white surrender handkerchief. May you stay safe and free of damage.

I am now just outside the Hurricane Watch area for Nicole. Apparently she has slowed down because now she is not predicted to come into my area until about 5 hours later. Interestingly, Nicole is probably going to prevent me from getting to the dentist, as Ian did at the end of September. I wonder if there is a correlation. ;)

For those who might be interested in the storm track:

Nicole will probably be much milder than Ian, but...you never know. Intesification and changes in storm track can happen at any time. Ian was headed for Tampa and came in much further south. Charley was headed for Fort Myers and at the last minute, turned north, increased to Cat 4 and demolished Port Charlotte.

Which is what drives me nuts. I don't really want to bring in (again!) all the outside plants, garden equipment, etc, etc, and put plywood up if it turns out to be mild - or even nothing.

OTOH, if I don't do all this and it gets worse, a lot of destruction could occur.

So it is the indecision that drives me nuts.

Yes, he is miserable being sick with fever, etc and miserable for missing this trip. He was only out two days (of 8) before it hit. He has been planning this for 9 months, going to the gym, walking with a 30 pound pack for miles daily. He lost over 50 pounds and greatly increased his strength and endurance. He is using up valuable PTO from his work for covid. I do feel for him.

That’s actually horrible. I am heartbroken for him. I really hope that he can apply all that training and preparation to a new trip in the future, but how disappointing. I’m glad to know he has your understanding and compassion, poor guy.

Jeesh, life is tricky sometimes, between all the disappointment and impending hurricanes.

Being on the west coast in Florida it will probably only be wind and rain
according to predictions.
But, yeah, it could intensify. Who knows?

I'm going through the dilema of should I move all the plants and furniture from around the pool- Again!
Just got them all fixed up and everything in place.
I know how unpredictable these things are.
They predict they will do one thing and then intensify and do something else.
Hard to know.

I was checking out the current position with covid yesterday, and apparently the US is experiencing more ongoing issues than the general trend. Possibly the measures taken haven't quite done the trick yet. On the whole though, elsewhere it is lessening it's hold.

I have the same problem with decision making. I’m closer than you to the storm track. I will be bringing in many of my plants, my orchids. Do I put up plywood or not? Should I move all the other outside stuff?

Do I cancel my evening client appt? Do I cancel the dentist?

Just remembered I have to finish payroll and also vote.

My executive functioning is burning out. Not that it is ever great.

Ooo, what kind of orchids do you keep? I'm sure they'll do well with your good care.

I think I'd take a nap. Even a twenty-minute powernap helps me re-order myself and my day.

Although, I've never had to spend several days worrying about a storm. When our tornado siren goes off, it's get someplace safe, quick. When we lived in the land of perpetual forest fires (CA), it was pack the car as fast as possible and leave. So I've never had to belabor the what-if scenario for too long.

Thinx, we live in Florida. We have a governor who does not believe in science. We have a population that, in general, has their own alternate facts. A lot of people don't get vaccinated. At my husband's work, people are out sick with covid all the time.

Right now Nicole is headed right for me.

I am getting bands of high winds. Gusts probably around 30-35 mph, based on movement in the treetops. Cloudy but no rain yet.

I have most everything outside picked up or tied down that I am going to get picked up or tied down. Inside chores like running laundry, dishwasher, getting a shower, etc, need to be done before I lose power.

Thanks for listening.

Stay safe and keep us posted when you can. I will be thinking of you from up North. It sounds like you are super prepared to ride this out safely.

It is now 4:15 am and I'm on the west coast by Tampa.
It's starting to rain and winds are coming in gusts.
I put all of my plants, stands and outdoor furniture from around the pool into the
lanai today.
Heard it just made landfall at Vero Beach a few hours ago.

See you all again tonight if we don't lose power.

I had a lot of wind and rain starting at 2 am this morning.

Nicole took a slight jog north just before landfall and that spared us. I’m certain it made things worse for others.

I see the damage on the east coast around Flagler and Volusia counties was bad.
The eye passed over us just to the north this morning and you would never have
even known it in the house.

There was more rain though than even with Ian where I live. No power outage for our area. Although there were over 60,000 in Pinellas county last I heard.

Here in South Carolina I woke up & heard the rains passing over at about 2 or 3 in the morning. Hopefully Florida is in decent shape.
