Anyone else remember the feud between Smashing Pumpkins and Collective Soul

Idk why but this feud has always been funny to me. In the mid 1990s, Billy Corgan (the singer/guitarist of Smashing Pumpkins) sued Collective Soul because he felt as though the opening riff to Shine was similar to Snail. Ed Roland, the singer of Collective Soul, actually brought a demo of Shine from 1989 to court, which predates Smashing Pumpkins first album (1991), which has Snail on it. Even after all these years, Billy still holds that grudge lmao.


 
I don't remember this, but I always thought "Shine" sounded like Smashing Pumpkins due to that string bend in the chorus.

Corgan really doesn't let go of grudges. He seems to still have an issue with Pavement over "Range Life." Smashing Pumpkins made some great music, but his insecurity is pretty nauseating. Some real horror stories there, according to D'arcy Wretzky.

**Edit: "Snail" has the smallest similarity. I think it says a lot that he would sue for that.
 
Nope. I feel that pissing matches or weenie wagging between celebrities is not worth the waste of my mental energy.

It's smacks of insecurity. You have to stop yourself, and ask am l feeling insecure, why do l let this bother me? Corgan may have thought he might just get a settlement and Collective Soul would just payout. Some people take lawsuits on this aspect alone.
 
I know I'm not famous or whatever (if that's even a part of this) but if I really thought someone ripped me off, I'd be honored. In fact, many people have randomly grabbed my songs off the internet and remixed them without my permission and without any credit back to me and my response was always, "Wow, I'm glad you could use this as inspiration!". I always thought it was so cool that they'd even put in the effort. Even though most people would consider this to border on plagiarism, it's really endearing anyway. Maybe it's different when you're making millions, but I like to think that I'd still have the same attitude even if I were.

Being someone's influence is one of the best feelings in the world.
