Anyone remember the original Power Rangers shows of the 90s?

I'm just watching one of the better Power Rangers clones, Big Bad Beetle Borgs, on Netflix, it was one of this kind of "So bad it's good" kind of kids' shows of the early 1990s.

Anyone over 25 should remember them...

I remember Power Rangers Turbo more to be honest, although this was because I was born in 1992 and didn't really start getting into watching television (to my knowledge) until I was 4 years old.
As for Beetleborgs, I re-watched a few episodes some time back (as well as some episodes of V.R Troopers) and couldn't help but laugh at how bad they both were.

Yeah Power Rangers Turbo was crap. The best was the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers show, mainly cos I fancied the original Yellow Ranger, played by Thuy Trang, apparently she died a few years back.

To be fair I thought Turbo was good at the time and actually liked Justin (blue was my favorite color as a kid and the idea that a kid could fight off alien invaders alongside a group of young adults was quite appealing), but since I hadn't seen any of the previous series in order to compare them (or even know what the full story behind the Power Rangers was), I tolerated it better then many other fans - even with the sillier storylines like that villain who trapped the rangers in a giant pizza.

Me (child): *Worried* How are the rangers going to get out of this one.
Me (adult): *Confused* What the hell?!

I do, but at the time I knew a lot of the action sequences were taken from a Japanese show and Power rangers was built around that show, so cheap telly for the production company. It annoyed me as kids in my class insisted the whole thing was an original production. (Incidentally my username is that of another Power Rangers-esque Japanese show, albeit animated and not live action. I never watched it as a kid as it was never shown in the UK for being too violent.)

The Super Sentai series (off which Power Rangers is based) actually goes all the way back to the late 70s. They pretty much revamp the show every season with a new cast and theme, but the formula is essentially the same.

What's really interesting is that Stan Lee wanted to make a deal to get the American rights to Super Sentai. As part of the deal he leant them the rights to Spider Man, which resulted in a less than faithfull adaptation of the charcacter. The live action Spider Man series that resulted featured all of Spides normal abilities, but he also had a giant robot named Leopardon. The robot was such a hit they decided to add giant robots to all of the subsequent Sentai series. Unfortunately, Marvel never got the rights to Super Sentai, so it would still be a couple of decades before American kids got to enjoy the colour coded superhero team.

I loved Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers! Spent endless amounts of time playing Power Rangers pretend games with friends in primary school, I was always White Ranger :)

Yes I do I use to watch all the time,my favourites were the pink ranger Kimberly and the white ranger tommy.

You just reminded me of something funny.

When I was a kid I was sitting in the living room watching TV. Suddenly I exclaimed, "Oh my god, Tommy's naked!" My mom suddenly burst into the room. She was so dissapointed to find out I was watching Rugrats and not Power Rangers.

Bad mouth Beetle Borgs again and I will beat you :D Seriously though, I watched it all the time as a kid and rewatched it on Netflix and it holds up perfectly. It was always more comedic and silly than Power Rangers (even though they weren't serious to begin with). If anything Mighty Morphin was way more so bad it's good because Beetle Borgs was always more obviously tongue in cheek.

Back on topic, I watched Power Rangers regularly up until Dino Thunder. My interest was fading long before that mostly due to feeling I was too old to get away with watching it. That was mostly due to the return of Tommy and I haven't seen an episode of any series since. I wanted to watch every series on Netflix to catch up but I haven't made it past the first few episodes of Mighty Morphin. They're just so formulaic and cheesey it's nothing like how I remember them being. I am going to carry on because iZombie gave me a major crush on Rose McIver and she was the yellow ranger in RPM and I've heard good things about that series.

Also did you hear about the red ranger who murdered his flatmate with a sword? And what are your thoughts on the new movie? I don't have much hope for it.

Sometimes I used to watch Power Rangers, but with the
sound off. It was better with no sound. That way it looked
like a Japanese opera . . . anyway that was what I thought
at the time.

The original Power Rangers was good through Zeo, then it went to crap with Turbo and Disney then bought Saban in 2003 and ran into the ground until 2012 when Saban founded his new Company.

The 2017 Power Rangers movie is a reboot of the Mighty Morphin.
These are the suits (which were released a earlier this year)

The reboot is set in Angel Groves like the original series, where Zordon summons 5 Teenagers with Attitude (they even use the same names)
Zordon is Bryan Cranston
Rita Repusla is Elizabeth Banks

The cast is fully Westernized and no dubbed Japanese actors like the original program (Rita, Zedd, Goldar, and a few others were from the Japanese version using the actual footage)
The original Power Rangers is still watchable and enjoyable through Zeo.

VR Troopers and Power Rangers were vastly superior to Beetle Borgs.

Remember the original movie with the annoyingly annoying Ivan Ooze character? That was crap, the best thing about it was that one hit wonder song by Shampoo, "Uh Oh we're in trouble", catchy, but in a good way

Also, 27 years after the original series is too late to do a reboot movie IMO, nobody under 30 will care.

Did you ever watch Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie?

I had both on VHS and used to watch them all the time. I also have the Mighty Morphin movie on DVD and watched it a few years ago, wow it does not hold up. Strange since the series feels the same as when I saw them on tv. I don't dare watch the Turbo movie as an adult since I wasn't a fan of that series to begin with.

That said, I did watch the movie when I was still a kid but a bit older and I can easily say it was awful.

I'm not the only one:

Turbo was the first Power Ranger series
How? I was born in 92 too and Mighty Morphin was still the first I saw, it was on all the time. I saw the Turbo movie many times without ever even knowing there was a Turbo series. I swear I'd already seen In Space before Turbo. One of the biggest things that put me off the Turbo series was the fact that Tommy wasn't in it like in the movie.

And no offense to you but I watched one of that guys videos before and I'll slit my wrists before I ever watch him again.

I just got into it at a different time then, I suppose - I was maybe focused on other stuff on the TV.

Sorry about that - I do like to bring in his videos a bit if I feel like they're necessary, but I understand and respect that he's not everyone's cup of tea.

That makes sense, would probably explain why I saw the series so late unless I just remember wrong. I know I've always been obsessed with tv and film and would and still do watch more than the average person.

And yeah, he's not my thing, in fact I watched that video to give him the benefit of the doubt and wanted to punch my screen the entire time. I don't see the appeal. I love redlettermedia so maybe his humour isn't dark enough for me. All I know is I finished that video wanting to watch the movie. For a 90s movie spin-off of a show that recycles japanese footage those effects were really good.
