I was fiddling around on my iPod (like I do constantly) and I was thinking about this. If I don't actively do something with my hands and my brain I sometimes start to stim pretty intensely and can't stop myself (especially laying in bed like I am now for some reason). However, I won't stim (or at least not as much) if I am occupied with something that engages both my mind and hands.
I have thought about things like fidget toys, but those won't help when I am around other people because it seems like it would be almost as strange to watch as if I was stimming (which I won't allow myself to do around other people which does make me more anxious and uncomfortable than I would be if I did let myself). Anyway, one thing I think would work really well is anything I could have on my iPod touch. I always have my iPod with me (its basically my lifeline), and it would be much more normal and subtle if I could find something to stimulate my hands and mind on my iPod.
One thing that sometimes helps are doing word searches. Especially when I am bordering on anxiety attack/melt down mode. However, I go through word searches very quickly, so after a bit they no longer do much for me and even give me a headache from staring at the letters.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good apps that would work well for Aspies in place of things like fidget toys. I imagine things like the Bubble Wrap Popping one might work well. But I've never known how to really look for apps that would work well to stimulate but still be fairly simple, and preferably repetitive and involving a lot of hand/finger movements/touch.
They don't necessarily have to be games, either. Any app that may provide some kind of stimulation would be great.
(Not sure if this is the right place for this thread, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place.)
