Arctic Blast in the USA

Okay. Who gave Mr. Freeze a weather machine? :P

But seriously. For all the folks in the USA that are in the middle/upper mid-west(like myself) and east coast. We are going to be hit with a cold blast from the north. The northern states will see potential drops down to -30°F(-34.4°C). The middle states will likely see as low as -1°F(-18.3°C).

On top of that. Another winter storm is coming through the center of the country. Though where I am at is in the upper end of the system. Maybe get a few inches of snow.

And in the south most states. They are looking at more rain.

I know there will be de-icing and snow shoveling.

It is a bit chilly north of the border, too. It looks like the Moose fur parasites will die this year, which has been getting rare. I'm enjoying the sunshine, up to ten hours a day now.

We had about 4 inches of slush freeze solid in the night and with very low temps for the next few days, it is here to stay. I'm running out of places to put the snow when I shovel it. Though, I prefer snow to ice any day.

It’s suppose to get down to 34F on by mid week Wednesday night but get back up to around 48F on Thursday along the South Texas coast. Texas weather in general has a bipolar attitude as we only have two seasons Summer and Winter. The other two seasons are just short term outliers lol

A relative posted their weather forecast in NoDak. The graphic said "-29f..........feels like -44f"!

I've never lived in such a cold area- but is there much difference between -29 and -44? In a sensory way?

+29F and +44F would be noticeable somewhat to me.

Sounds like the cold will moderate sooner than later on the other side of the Sierra- best wishes.

I just found an interesting map - average yearly temperatures around the globe. The coolest parts of Australia are similar to the warmest parts of the US.

Hadn't realized that the South Island of New Zealand is considerably cooler- Tasmania too.
Tasmania has a similar climate to southern UK so I'm surprised it didn't become more populated during early settlement, that huge island today only has a population of just over 500,000. During summer they probably have more tourists than residents. :)

They're the same thing. Just units of measurement. Many people easily mentally convert from one to the other.
I have a chemistry background only used celsius I do not like converting Zero means no snow, real simple. If I had my way stick with Kelvin, Only the people south of us use the other crazy system. I did as a kid no longer care.

^IIRC, our government tried to get us to switch to metric in the 70s but it just mostly never caught on outside the scientific community. I’m trying to learn conversions, because I agree it’s scientifically better for freezing to be 0, but after decades of F, it’s a bit of a learning curve. F feels more intuitive because of the higher scale. (I know: ‘it’s hard’ isn’t an excuse.)

That being said:

Lows are going dip to -3 C where I Iive in a couple days. Makes me think of getting some firewood and lighting my fireplace for the first time in a while.

We switched over in the sixties, hated doing engineering in the other system in high school then it got dropped.
Like metric my parents are European, took chemistry in college so it worked out OK. Either way I found out I can walk in -3 C,
