Are You A Hoarder or Pack Rat?

So, most people have a nice home and its got nice stuff in it, a couple of pieces people gravitate to that start up a conversation
IE; I love the _ _ _ _, where did you find it?

Some people have more stuff than they need and they may then have a room they won?t show to you or at least a cupboard they won?t open while there?s anybody around. These people usually fit into one of two categories as classified by me.

The first is a pack rat (my Dad was); you?ve got stuff stashed away because you know one day it will come in handy!
The second is a hoarder (Mother is); you?ve got stuff around everywhere just simply for the sake of having stuff!

Mmmm, the names could be the other way around, anyway, those definitions are not necessarily as accurate as they could be but that was how I grew up, I would need a length of string and my dad could tell me which shed and in what box had the exact length I needed, towards the end of his life he used to like to be out amongst his gear, categorizing it so mother could sell it all easily to pay for his funeral. She just threw most of it out when he died anyway.
Now she on the other hand, has a thing where she will buy something just to have it and then she would put it away and never look at it again and woe betide anybody who wanted to use it or even look at it, any flat surface has a stack of gear on there and just sits gathering dust, a lot of it is actual rubbish that she just didn?t throw out yet.
I find I am now an combination of the two!

I have junk in boxes and I don?t even know what most of it is but I cant get rid of it though, there was another thread here about whether your messy or neat and this is gonna be like that but different!

Do you save everything, as later it might be needed or do you just not ever let anything leave?

I like shows like ?American Pickers? and ?Hoarders? and watch them with amazement at the fact that my family weren?t the only ones who had piles and piles of stuff everywhere.
I actually once went through a couple boxes of my own and discovered empty bottles and wrappers, newspapers and pamphlets and yes, while it was interesting to see all this stuff from many years ago, I was distressed to find I had been lugging this crap with me every time I moved. I even used to bring home the wrappers and stuff from those rare times I took lunch to school, simply because I thought that any rubbish from stuff I had bought from home, had to go back home with me! Weird huh!

If anything I'm a bit of a packrat.

But that comes with having hobby's well into crafts and such.

Also... I think that if I were to scatter my stuff around a house, it wouldn't that bad, but it looks like I'm collecting things for the sake of it cause I kinda store everything in boxes and such in my bedroom which is 13 by 11 foot or so. Occasionally I end up having a box or something in the garden, but in general I store everything in my living/bedroom.

Why do I save it? Yeah, probably "I might need it sometime"... but honestly I don't save everything, but I tend to save things like out of date plastic bankcards (or similiar cards) because for instance thin plastic sheet is silly expensive for the rare moments I really need it. On the other hand, I do have a lot of things around that I have around for practical reasons. I have large sheets of paper around because... yeah, I might need those someday and I don't want to go to the store, buy a single sheet (which usually cant be done and should be sold in packs) and throw the rest away.

Every once in a while I clean up a bit, go through boxes and see if I really need it because of my limited space. Sometimes I can find stuff I can even sell off for parts.

A funny thing is and I kinda thought about it right now. One thing I am collecting all the time as well is boxes/containers. Ranging from plastic icecream containers to cups with a lid... to have around and keep small parts separated and a bit together.

I kinda collect bottlecaps not for the reason of collecting them as an obsession but more on a rather geeky sidenote. Anyone who played the Fallout series games would get a chuckle from it now, lol.

A thing I do kinda hoard... boxes of bought stuff. But... I usually try to keep them around until the warranty is expired.. I've learned that from my dad, who never keeps boxes or receipts for that matter, thus he always gets in trouble over warranty if something breaks down.

In general I don't really want to part with a lot of stuff, but I learned that over time some things are just not as valuable to me anymore so I slowly learned to part ways with things I had. Ranging from CD's to DVD's up to hobby interests.

My mom is a hoarder though, she buys lots and lots of stuff in budget stores, as well as buying food/candy a lot. So we're usually packed around here, to at some point my dad is cleaning out the cupboard and throws it away cause it's expired. At one time my mom had chocolate letters stocked... (we have those in stores around december for a national celebration thing).. but she kinda had the entire alphabet around, which is way over the one letter a person most people would have, lol. But she can buy bags of stuff in budget stores and not really have a use for it. My dad used to hoard dvd's... he'd just buy anything budget and leave it around. Some of those movies are still in wrapped and in the attic now. It's kinda silly... at least use it.

Sometimes I even feel my dad is hoarding digital receiver/decoders/harddisc&dvd recorders for the tv. We have way too much of those around the house... yes, they are being used, but I don't think people need a tv hooked up with 5 machines or so in more than 1 room. But he's usually like "well, yeah... maybe, someday there'll be 5 programs on at once"... which is a valid argument if you're not using the internet and watching programs (or even downloading them) like he is I guess.

And my dad hoards tools. Which is good, because I can use those as well ^^ but I don't really know why someone would need 5 drills and 6 torque wrenches of the same size. I reckon most people have a toolbox with wrenches and hammers, but he's got like 5 toolboxes which are quite similar in content. He does also have a lot of screws, nails, and whatever you might need, around. So usually I can ask him for a screw to fix X and he'll be like... top shelf, third box, fifth slot.

My parents both had/have issues with keeping too much stuff.
My Mom (RIP) kept stuff all over after her 2nd husband died (I wasn't born yet) so was a slight hoarder. Prior to the husbands death, she was a neat-freak.
My dad is a pack-rat, although he hoarded right after my mom died. He keeps stuff "just incase." I grew up with a "junk drawer" full of such things.

I do not hoard or packrat (except for art supplies- anyone who paints or draws know you have to be stocked on pencils and paint) but it's all in one pink bucket under my bed.
I make an effort to not even keep too many clothes. I try to be minimal. This happened after my mom died. I got rid of everything. I do have my stuffed animals, toy frogs, a plant, and Japanese cats my boyfriend got me for my birthday as well as a snake skeleton. These things are important to me, but I make SURE I don't keep too much stuff.

hehehe, wasteland money! You need the Fortune Finder Perk ; ]

I agree with you on the scatter stuff around idea King_Oni, I have just about the right amount of possessions for a two bedroom house, but too much by far, for a two room apartment!
Also, the collecting containers is a big thing for me, I have bottles and boxes and canisters of all sizes just waiting to have some detritus stored in them and I know they are just taking up space but, what if I really need to stow something in a hurry someday and yeah, what about those ones that belong to specific items and can’t really be used or discarded.
HelloDizzy makes a point too that there is a certain comfort in being a minimalist; I concede that too much crap is an anchor and can limit choice and sudden impulse.

I don’t want to go into how many times over the years I have bought this, that or the other to eat and then months later I will have to throw it out because I suddenly remember it's there and have then found it lurking at the back of the fridge in a gang with some of its mates, most of them having grown impressive mould beards

Oh.. being a minimalist would be good, but I have just way too many interests and activities that need physical items.

If I could magically summon all my instruments that would at least clear roughly a quarter of my room when they wouldn't be there. And like I said... crafts and such, and keeping things for it around. It's somewhat mandatory I guess.
Years ago when I had a job and had a lot more money, I didn't care for saving stuff around. My room was more cleaned up and I'd just go out and buy whatever I needed when I needed it, thus money kinda makes me save up on a lot of random items.

I do wonder that if I move out and get my own apartment... if I'm not gonna hoard more just cause I have more space, lol.

Also, it strikes me as kinda funny, that whenever my girlfriend comes over and she has her stuff all over, it annoys the hell out of me... I kinda feel that "my mess" is the only thing allowed in my... well.. storage facility.

Rarely did food end up where it really went bad, but I'm careful with expiration dates.

I don't know if Hoarding is the right word but I like to collect things. Books, dolls, teddies, rocks, I still have all of my textbooks through all three degrees (AA, BA, and MSW), I tend to have 3-ring binders full of my obessions like albums, I collect unicorns and dragons, and anything with Anime or Manga. So I don't know you all tell me does that mean I'm a hoarder? I don't think so but I could be wrong.:cute:
