Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, etc, should retire...

I love their classics. But come on. They're both in their 70s now. I do get enjoyment from watching their older movies. They're timeless compared to the trash they starred in recently.

The last Terminator movie was a kick below the belt. Totally embarrassing. So you're gonna render T1 and T2 obsolete by doing what you did at the start of the film to John Connor, who was basically supposed to be the whole purpose of the franchise. Right? So they finally had an opportunity to right the wrongs of T3 onwards, but they messed it up anyway. So sad!

Creed is just a repeat of Rocky, really. And Rambo: Last Blood did not even feel like it was really the same character. For some reason, the UK version misses out the first 8 or so minutes. Like, why? It was actually more like a Taken movie. At the end of the movie, you feel about as empty as Sly did, while he was tilting about on that rocking chair on the porch. And the brief but cheesy mid-credits scene with the horse!? Oh my God. No more, please.

Retire with some dignity. We will always have the golden age of action movies to appreciate. So just end things gracefully.

I told a big Stallone obsessive that he sounded like he'd been kicked in the head by a mule. This was after re-watching Rocky III. There was some emotional scene where he's trying to tell his wife about his fears etc. etc. and he sounded so stupid, that a supposedly poignant scene had me laughing hard.

She went on a huge rant, firing off all sorts of facts at me. Supposedly he had nerve damage that caused a speech impediment, and he never took steroids etc etc.

Then to turn it on it's head, she said I was stupid and ignorant etc etc.

She really enjoyed my reply:

Needless to say we don't talk any more.

But yes, these aging actors aren't good. A bit like Harrison Ford, seeing him attempt to be Indy in any film after the 3rd is not going to be a pleasant experience.

I've hear rumors regarding the fifth movie (take these with a pinch of salt, mind you).

Those rumors include that the next movie will be set in the 1960's, it will involve time travel (with old Indiana Jones and young Indiana Jones interacting with each other via some digital de-aging), Old Indy will essentially be getting dragged along by a group of younger women - one of whom will be played by Phoebe Waller Bridge - who are able to do everything better than him (the movie likely making reference to the pay gap of the time) and the end result will be Old Indy dying and Phoebe taking over the franchise; the end scene apparently been her putting on his hat and walking off into the sunset.

As said, this is all rumor but considering this movie involves Kathleen Kennedy (who many blame as been one of the major reasons the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is despised by fans, with that series involving Han Solo unceremoniously getting murdered by his son in The Force Awakens) as well as this current trend of characters been race/gender-swapped or replaced with "more diverse" characters, I wouldn't rule some of this stuff out.

Hollywood recycles so many scripts, so it shouldn't be a stretch to see them recycle aging major action stars.

Maybe they should stop doing BOTH.

Better still is to stop the practice of pairing ageing male lead actors romantically with women who could be their granddaughters. But then I doubt Hollywood will ever listen as long as such concepts produce consistent and predictably modest returns.

It remains kind of ironic though that Hollywood so easily dismisses the oldest audience demographic while still casting them for the kiddies to eat up like candy. WTH?

The woman was truly delusional then. :tearsofjoy:

:pensive: No, but she's right about the nerve damage, some kind of birth defect, when he was born, his face, paralyzed or something, hence...his mumbling.

Yo aaadrian!!!!!

I like Stallone. I'm on the pro Stallone side of things. He appears dumb , but he actually wellspoken and smart.

I don't care about how many movies , these guys make.

I don't think they should necessarily retire but do agree they have past the shelf life of the some of the roles they are trying to play. There is no problem with actors working in advanced age if they are up to it. In fact my favorite actors are often those who act all their life. Its also good having a balance of older people as well as young beautiful people, etc. But these are actors playing older roles. I have a bad viseral response to older folks trying to play younger 'action hero' type roles. It seems more failed vanity then realism.

@Slim Jim thing is, you can't argue a point when someone believes the exact opposite. Especially someone who is an obsessive fan.

I do think Stallone has done some great movies though, but I still think he sounds like he got kicked in the head by a mule.

What does age have to do with an actor’s ability to work? Christopher Plummer had roles well into his 80s and Clint Eastwood had Cry Macho released last year and he’s in his 90s.

@Raggamuffin
It's like singers, every great one has their own distinct style. Well Stallone, like Arnold, Their accents, dialect, is what makes them stand out from the crowd, stand out from all the lesser action stars.

It's funny , now that I think bout it, Van Damn, Lungdren, all had accents. Throw in Steven Seagull* there too. New York Italian.

Talk funny + muscles = Action Star in the 80's. The Formula. :tearsofjoy:

* Intentional typo

I think it depends on the role.
Sean Connery was good as James Bond in his younger years and, even in his older years, he was good to watch in certain movies as long as they were entertaining - whether it was playing an old British spy in The Rock, an immortal swordsman in Highlander, a renegade Russian submarine commander in Red October (which I enjoyed despite him not even trying to change his Scottish accent. No craps given there. :D) and even doing the voice of Draco in DragonHeart - the ending music of which I listened to when Sean Connery sadly passed away in October 2020.

I'm assuming this thread is within the context of larger-than-life action heroes. Not simply leading actors.

I've never seen Christopher Plummer (RIP) play larger-than-life action heroes. Though I certainly enjoyed his portrayal of convicted career criminal Eddie Chapman, who ended up as a double agent working for British military intelligence in the film "Triple Cross". A true story and great film, but not easily found on television or streaming media.

Always amusing that Plummer hated everything about the film "The Sound of Music". :p

Kudos for Clint Eastwood, who seems at least willing to play the old man that he has become. He can threaten and snarl all he wants to, as long as it's from the perspective of an old man. That I'm ok with.

Though I find Stallone's comments on the evolution of the film indistry quite interesting. Particularly where he claims that in this day and age, indie films like his "Rocky" could not likely be made. And that time and circumstances have passed the silver screen by, leaving only room for streaming media. Though I have yet to really see Sylvester Stallone on film as the old man he really is.

Which still leaves me chuckling about an old Kirk Douglas paired with Farrah Fawcett in the movie "Saturn 3". Where the only believable character seemed to be Harvey Keitel. An actor so good at portraying bad and malevolent characters.

Stallone and Schwarzenegger should star in a zombie movie together as the main zombies. The only word of dialogue they will be given is to say "BRAAAAINS!" repeatedly. It would still be a smarter film than Escape Plan was.

Governor: "But do I get to shove them down a toilet before I eat them?
Director: "Uhhhh no Governor. Just stick to the script."
Stallone: "But I still get to say, Yo Adrian before I eat them, right?"
Director: "Lunch Break Everyone!"

Then introduce Bruce Campbell into the mix fighting them with a chainsaw. Admit it, most of us would pay good money to see that movie.

I think Bruce Campbell has been underrated for a long time, he kicked ass as Ash in Evil Dead and he is a solid actor.

About old actors, if I was Stallone and somoene called me and said "Hey, I want to pay you $30 million to be in my movie", I would be in that movie no matter how crappy it was. I wouldn't care, I would get paid.

Then again, if it were a comedy and I were Stallone, I would rather commit seppuku. I remember Oscar and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot.

I read something funny about that movie, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot. Stallone said yes to that role because he had heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger was interested in it. Then it turned out that Schwarzenegger had started that rumour to get Stallone to say yes to the movie. If that is true, then it is hilarious. :)

Apparently it is. Arnold talked about this here
