A teenager with Asperger's syndrome has been dubbed a "hero" after he sprang to the aid of a terrified dog stuck on a roof.

Alex Perfect, 14, from Caterham, was visiting his grandparents in Guildford when he noticed the dog moving around on the roof of a three-storey house.

The teenager alerted neighbours after discovering that the owners of the property were not in.

After several unsuccessful rescue attempts, Alex called the fire brigade.

"My heart was racing but I knew that I had to stay calm," he said.

“When the fire crew arrived I helped the firemen hold out a safety blanket, while another member of the team went up onto the roof to save Tilly.”

The plucky teenager, who lives with Asperger's and ADHD, won an award for inspiring young people in Surrey a couple of months ago after being nominated by his doctor.

In an article for his school magazine, Alex wrote: "I used to feel embarrassed because of my disability but now I'm not and I want people to know that it doesn't have to stop you in life or define you as a person."

The Health and Wellbeing Surrey CYA (CAMHS Youth Advisors) Awards night, which is held every year in Woking, saw more than 300 people attend.

Mother Maria said: "I'm just so proud of him. He's a hero.

"Alex at first said he couldn't get up to receive the award due to so many people, but yet again to my amazement he then said he was going to overcome the fear.

“Alex is the kind of young man who is so very kind, caring and always thinking of others."

Tilly's owners, Simon and Hazel Thornton, have also praised the youngster by sending a thank you card and some money.

Alex said he would spend his reward on buying a toy for Tilly to try to keep her out of mischief in future.
