Aspie dad, tried CBT, worries about parenting and keeping job

I recently tried a CBT session for what I thought was social anxiety and depression related to dealing with family problems when I was young. Instead we ended up setting goals for acceptance and coping with aspergers, and a suggestion to consider trying for a diagnosis. Im not that surprised but didn't expect to only focus on aspergers issues.

Im dad to a 7yr old and married to understanding partner with some mild aspie traits herself. Ive always gone from one obsessive hobby to another switching typically every couple of years. Ive tried to keep the hobbies useful and have been lucky to make a career out of them. I also want to be a good dad and husband.

The workplace is where I get to be useful in my obsessions of doing visual applied maths things with computers. Also its where I seem to offend most people. Ive just changed teams to try to find a better fit (Im fed up of being required to have an interest in football or talk about physical exercise!)

Im here for a bit of company and chat. Hopefully being here will help me relax a bit and hopefully I can be company for others here.

I love pure blue and remember thinking the main beam headlight indicator lamp of dad's car was ful of magic. Leds and fibre optics are amazing. So...I've made some technologies at work relating to intense point light sources and predicting the colour of products from chemical recipes.

Glad to have you here. I am also a parent on the spectrum. I hope you find the website helpful.
Best wishes

Hi Fluid. I'm the mom of a kid on the spectrum, and while I don't have a diagnosis, I suspect my genes played a role in his. Among other things, I too go from one obsessive hobby to another, the most recent (which has actually stuck around for a number of years!) being Lampwork. In other words, I melt glass in a 2000*F flame and make things with it.

And being obsessive, I have done some research on the diff chemicals that produce the colors I use (Gold for pinks, cobalt for blues how copper makes blue but copper and tin can make red, etc). I suspect some of that info might be right up your alley; if you're interested in chatting about it let me know!

Ever mess around with those 445nm blue laser diodes. Those put off a nice cobalt blue and you can get them in very high power levels for next to nothing.

@FluidHomeFront , it sounds like the person you were doing the CBT with is a keeper. My goodness, when I think of all the years, decades, I spent chasing after the symptoms, to no great effect mind, and never suspecting the major cause of it all...

It sounds like the CBT worker has a more holistic approach in mind: dealing with both cause and effect; something which has allowed me to make more headway with all this than I would have otherwise. Should I point out that one session of any therapy offers only a mere suggestion of what is possible?

Welcome.

Welcome! It's good to hear you've been able to find a job that fits your interests, you're lucky indeed!
I hope the people of AC can help you unwind when you need to, I know it's been a helpful place for me :)
