Aspie interest commonality

I've noticed a few commonalities in things that people with Asperger's syndrome tend to be interested in. I haven't done this very scientifically, but here's the list:
Japanese music/culture/language/anime
Star Trek
Sherlock Holmes
Video games/minecraft
Computers/tech stuff (this one's stereotypical, but true for a lot of people)
Colors that range from blue to green
I know that not all of these items will apply to everyone, but they seem to be more common in the Aspie population than in the general population. Thoughts? Has anyone come up with similar observations?
P.S. My main source for this list was another forum.

Hi Catgirl, and welcome : )

While many of these don't apply to me, I have also noticed these trends. Although I never picked up on the colours ranging from blue to green... that one definitely applies to me!

Japanese culture - as someone living in Asia I can say I know a little of Japanese, English and two other Asian languages, and I am learning a little Korean, it appears to me Japanese culture is one that of honor, pride, love of family, loyalty, individuality and expression in a rigid societal context underneath. This is something many of us Aspies like, regardless of where we are born. Plus, they are colorful, and we are exposed to them almost as much as the West's own Marvel and DC Comics.

There are other multi-lingual Aspies in our forum too, and many of them like Japanese stuff.

Sherlock Holmes is also an exploration of English culture, which is deeply rooted in tradition and is socially rigid, as compared to the comparatively more flexible American and southern European culture in general. Minecraft and Star Trek are virtual representations of an alternate society, which most of us like for predictability.

Computer stuff is all about skill building and we don't need much socialization skills to learn it well (unlike accounting or sales).

As for colors, any Aspies who like red? Haha

Well, they could be generalities I suppose.

I love all these things. :P

I wouldn't say, of course, that all Aspies must like them. But I think that regardless of our individual activity preferences, we do tend to enjoy pursuits that foster creativity, independent thinking, and a tiny bit of escapism.

Japanese music/culture/language/anime YES
Star Trek YES
Sherlock Holmes Not the new one(haven't seen it) but YES
Video games/minecraft YES
Computers/tech stuff (this one's stereotypical, but true for a lot of people) YES
Colors that range from blue to green NO, I'm drawn to purple and black

One of the people involved with diagnosing my daughter said my husband was probably an aspie too like us, that conversation started because of his japanese baseball shirt and love of manga, the lady who does the screening tests/interviews said she'd noticed alot of the aspies she'd encountered had a love of all things japanese but particularly manga/anime.

What might be more interesting about this is to look into why these things might appeal to us.

That being said... I don't share the specifics of these examples that much I think.
- Japanese music/culture/language/anime
I'm fascinated by language in general, and while Japan and it's culture is interesting, it's not exclusive to me. And I don't like anime at all
- Star Trek
I'm not much of a trekkie. I find some appeal in Klingon as a language though.
- Sherlock Holmes
Meh... I don't hate it, but I'm not extremely into it. I would like to note that I do like the more recent Holmes movies, but perhaps that's more because of how he's portrayed there and how I like the setdesign and that historic setting in general
- Video games/minecraft
I don't see the appeal in Minecraft... but as some people jokingly said "Minecraft is lego for adults". I did like my lego as a child. I still like 3d design, but Minecraft not so much. Videogames in general... myea, argueable. I don't see myself as a big gamer, more than I see myself enjoying an interactive movie. If I want to play games I'll break out a boardgame.
- Computers/tech stuff (this one's stereotypical, but true for a lot of people)
Perhaps... but some part of me actually likes the low tech side more. I'm more attracted to analogue machines than I am to digital ones.
- Colors that range from blue to green
I don't know about this... I like blue to green gradients though. But I also like reds, and purples and a lot of other colors.

Yes, I'm fully aware this isn't a list that applies to all aspies, but as I said, I think it might be more interesting to see how it racks up to aspies in general and see the commonality in certain things if you go into detail. I mean, if one aspie likes Star trek, and one likes Star wars, I guess it's safe to say they both share an interest in "stuff in space". And I guess the focus could end up way narrower than that.

Perhaps it's because of a liking for logical and predictable systems?

However, I tend to think we may also like such things because of social conditioning. Our brains work in particular ways and peoples whose brains work in particular ways only have certain boxes to choose from.

Oh, Let's see, for me:
Japanese music (yes)/culture (yes)/language (yes)/anime (Almost- The only anime I'm enjoying as of recent is Gundam Build Fighters, and I'm more into Tokusatsu than Anime, preferably Super Sentai.)
Star Trek (NO)
Sherlock Holmes (NO)
Video games/minecraft (Video Games yes, both Playstation and Nintendo based though, but not Xbox and MineCraft)
Computers/tech stuff (this one's stereotypical, but true for a lot of people) (Yes, sometimes)
Also I have interest in Music (Preferably old songs, Teen Pop and J Pop) and My Little Pony too.

Japanese music/culture/language/anime Unfamiliar with it. However, I take a college class next room to a class of students studying Japanese and they are very loud during breaks and seem extremely un-Aspie-like.
Star Trek Used to be obsessed with TNG. Also used to have a crush on both Data and Spock. Mostly on Data.
Sherlock Holmes Very brief obsession with "Sherlock" then realized I actually like "Elementary" better.
Video games/minecraft I stay away from video games because I know that if I started I would be able to think of nothing else. I know this from playing Limbo and Portal, and being unable to think of other things atall. Have had the same problem with Age of Empires, except even longer-ongoing, and more irresistable.
Computers/tech stuff (this one's stereotypical, but true for a lot of people)
Colors that range from blue to green I like them, but not unusually interested
I know that not all of these items will apply to everyone, but they seem to be more common in the Aspie population than in the general population. Thoughts? Has anyone come up with similar observations?

Things not on list. MLP friendship is magic, zombies, studying ASD, Latin, writings of Luisa Picarretta (that's a Catholic thing), being a good conversationalist with my in-person friend

I have a fascination for Japanese culture but I don't know that much about it. I've been meaning to learn but college got in the way like a cat does when you're trying to read the paper.

I think this is a fasinating thread. interms of colours I like to us the blue for clarity, too me it is bright if not warm.

Interesting...Most of the items on this list don't interest me much, and goodness knows I know a TON of "neurotypicals" who are into all these things as well.

It's interesting to think about where these stereotypes might come from.

I love real and model trains, have so since I was to young to talk, the RMS Titanic and antique lawn mowers. I have a 1968 Wheelhorse garden tractor that is custom painted/decaled by me, custom engine installed by me and I mow my yard with it, then wash and wax before a show. Mike
