Christopher Blackwood told a young woman he would post her naked photographs "everywhere I can" if she didn't send him more pictures (file photo).
An Auckland man who told young women he would kill himself if they didn't send him photos of their naked bodies has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Christopher Blackwood, 24 was jailed on six charges of blackmail, one of intimidation and one charge of causing harm by posting digital communication. He had earlier pleaded guilty.
On Friday, Blackwood held his head in his hands as he was sentenced in the Auckland High Court to two years and three months imprisonment by Justice Christine Gordon.
Blackwood started manipulating five young women, some teenagers back in 2014, contacting them before threatening to kill himself if they did not send him naked pictures.
He would also offer to pay them money for sending him intimate recordings and pictures.
Blackwood then demanded the young women send more photos or he would post the images to social media.
His offending began in 2014 and spanned a two-year period.
On more than one occasion Blackwood promised he would not upload the victims' photographs on Facebook, but he did the exact opposite.
He then demanded more photos, when one of the victims refused he told her that if she did not send them to him immediately he would post her naked pictures "everywhere I can".
After repeatedly telling Blackwood she did not want to send any more intimate photos, he threatened: "Now or I'm posting all your pics".
After refusing, he sent her a photograph of a noose tied around a finger with a frowning face drawn on it, the summary of facts said.
On another occasion Blackwood threatened a different victim he would kill himself if she did not break up with her boyfriend.
He sent photos of him cutting his wrists, and also said he would kill himself if the teenager did not send him naked pictures.
SENTENCING
In pre-sentencing submissions Blackwood's defence lawyer Ish Jayanandan said Blackwood had been diagnosed with a mild degree of Asperger's syndrome in 2003 and a psychiatrist had later diagnosed him with a borderline personality disorder.
"There's nothing false about his anxiety and disorder."
Jayanandan said home detention would be a better sentence for Blackwood as treatment and counselling would reduce the likelihood of re-offending.
However Crown prosecutor Evan McCaughan said there was no link between Blackwood's mental issues and the offending.
McCaughan said the defendant had made no effort at restorative justice and had not taken any steps to give the victims any comfort the photos had been destroyed.
As Justice Gordon sentenced Blackwood to imprisonment she said blackmail preyed on people's vulnerabilities.
"You used photos of money in an attempt to bribe the victims for photos," Gordon said.
"They trusted you and they said their trust had been violated."
Gordon said all victims suffered emotional harm and they each lived in fear that their pictures were still online.
"Psychological and emotional harm is no less than physical harm and it can be more enduring in this case."
