Autism diagnosis discussion at meeting

So at a meeting at my school, they were discussing if it was right to put Autism down as one of my diagnosis. One thing that got me mad is two of them said I couldn't have Autism because I'm very smart. Which I felt like was an insult to other people with Autism. Like they were saying autistic people couldn't be smart.

But eventually they decided to put it down as a secondary diagnosis. I mean I had official papers from a psychologist saying I had Autism.

Everyone is smart in their own way. I feel like it wasn't right of those people to say that though.

I go to a therapeutic day school, I already graduated but they offer a program for graduates. Called Adult Prep Program. They teach you life skills and how to cook, clean, make a resume, make a cover letter, fill out applications, etc. You can go there until you're 22.

Yea, that was really insulting. If only they knew that autistic people came up with most of our current technology... Albert Einstein was autistic... Those people have no business diagnosing or speaking about anything if they don't know what they are talking about..IMO... Your school sounds nice though and I hope to find something like that for my son some day.

I'm afraid that's the typical narrow mindedness of idiots you will come across, they haven't studied Aspbergers properly as assume that all aspies must be as thick as their text books tell them.

I think a lot of people assume that everyone with Asperger's is a genius and that everyone with Autism is stupid. Both entirely wrong obviously, but people do love to hold onto their unfounded beliefs/stereotypes.

I guess that NT's like a well-rounded person. I am anything but. One of the most famous lines I always get is "If you're smart enough to do this, then why can't you do that.". I swear! I feel like f**king smacking them for saying that. Talk about insulting.

i agree xudo, lots of people with classical autism are traditionally and/or academically smart-like albert einstein, temple grandin, and stephen wiltshire for example,i hate the assumption that just because your classic autistic or classic autistic and low functioning-your thick, hey i have learning [intellectual] disability ontop of classic autism and im very smart in computers and animal behavior, never judge a persons capacity for life by their autism or IQ.
and not all aspies are academically smart, to use one unfortunately infamous example; barry george;the guy made famous by being blamed for the crime watch UK presenter jill dando murder, he was one point outside of the learning [intellectual] disability spectrum.

I was told the opposite once, I couldn't have Aspergers because my IQ wasn't high enough. I felt insulted, I don't think my IQ is that low.

You are lucky. My world just went into shatter mode when a Dr and autism specialist looked at all my documents which incluide a chromosomal abnormality, 2 drs dx with autism and PDD NOS and not growing tiull I got shots, and all that........he took 23 minutes and said to me, "You just have a personltiy disorder" WHen I asked why he said, "When peoples' lives go nowhere, we just assumes it's a PD"

No tests, nothong.

SInce then I have been actively in self harm mode (mostly hitting head), have been unable to leave my house ofr fear of hurting people and have not been able to sleep.

I had 25 years of straight therapy. PDs DO RESPOND to therapies. I f I had PD it would have improved. But it did not.

No therapy has ever helped me because it's not psych.

So now I am stuck, going to another Dr to see what they say. I know I am on spectrum. Just because they took ASpergers out of DSM does not mean I outgrew it .

Idiots. No . THey are worse than idiots. Evil people who would have killed my ancestors and whose ancestors probably DID kill mine.

You're not the only one who's been through this crap. I practically had my childhood ruined because of one misdiagnosis after the other. I never learned that I was on the spectrum until I was 41 years old.

@Blast off

Exactly, people with autism are smart. Some in different ways then others.

The school is called Camelot. Just to let you know. It's k-12. Then they have the app or adult prep program also. I live in Illinois though. So not sure if they have it where you live.

IQ tests in autistic people are useless, theres issues like information, auditory and language processing, anxiety and even stuff that affects everyone such as dehydration etc that causes IQ tests to appear as low.
if you were intellectually impaired you would have had this picked up at an early age,i have mild intellectual disability and this delayed my development in multiple ways and still affects my vocabulary and understanding of other peoples language [i use a dictionary and thesaurus always to use and understand language] ,behavior, inability to function in independant living without constant day/night support etc [although thats partly a throwback to my severe classic autism],i dont agree with IQ tests for autistic people as an intellectual judgement but the WAIS test is probably the best,i think it takes a lot of assessment to judge someones intellectual capacity better, i had functioning testing by an OT,SALT assessment, shrinks talked to my parents in long chats about my developmental history and current status, there were multi disciplinary teams discussing my case, however my 'mental retardation' label doesnt stop me from doing anything i want i have behavioral inhibitions that make me unaware of societies view of me so i dont see any limitations on what i can do,although in reality i couldnt do things that other people could do like GCSEs, degrees, live independantly without support but when im not feeling so depressed i like the way my life is.

I'm glad you don't let anything hold you back, Toothless. You sound like someone who is very brave and intelligent, despite your labels. Happy birthday to you as well, by the way! ♡

Me, too. Now imagine them taking that away from you. That is where I am :-( They sent my right back to full circle, where I was at 14.
My parents are very old, but they are going with me to another austim specialist and telling them how it is. The other guy listend to me all of 23 minutes.
