Autism Organizations Shortcomings

I liked several Autism groups, both national and local. After doing so, I began to notice reviews if the sites, by autistic individuals, saying the organization's are primarily focused on "how to parent an Autistic child." They don't concentrate...they barely touch on, adults on the spectrum. That's dissapointing. I guess any attention on the subject will encourage scientific research, but Hey People...those Autistic children won't suddenly become "Normies" just because they become adults. We need national support groups that focus on living the life....

I thought the biggest problem with such organization was that they hate autistics.

Agreed. If better support was offered, there can be more employed people paying taxes than using government services for financial assistance that takes away from taxes. My long term goal is having a organization help people with autism for employment for meaningful jobs. This is the reason why working hard on my business to make this a reality.

If and when their focus is primarily on eradicating autism, I suppose the mere existence of autistic adults is an inherent embarrassment to such organizational efforts. That in their envisioned future, we aren't really supposed to exist.

There is not currently any major (read: influential) organization that is specifically focused on Aspie adults. Aspies are included in orgs that are about the spectrum as a whole, but Aspies tend to get less emphasis, and even those orgs that supposedly cover autistics of all ages end up skewed toward children's issues.

One of many major shortcomings of all autism organizations is that once they reach a certain size, their agendas cease to be determined by the spectrum population at large, and are instead shaped by the priorities of their major contributors. This is true of orgs that represent other special interest groups as well.

I would like to change that one day. I rather run an non profit organization than work on my current business. I will try to make this dream come true. Need to take care of my current debts first.

I haven't had any real interaction with autism organisations, but through my research I have found programming specifically geared toward young adults and people over 25 with high functioning autism. However; I did find this age bias reflected at the book store. In trying to find books on autism all I could find were a couple of books in the parenting section, and some fiction that featured autistic characters. I was expecting to find something in the science section where you can find books on neurology, or in the self help section which covers conditions such as ADD and bipolar, but no. The only non-fiction on the subject was about raising children.

If you’ve seen one of my most recent posts on the thread about creating an art marketplace for people with ASDs, I mentioned that I am now investigating a bigger project, to which that enterprise could be attached. I’ll tip my hand, here, as this thread is so timely.

What I’m wanting to do is start a proper non-profit organisation dedicated wholly to Aspie adults, and I'm actively courting the ideal partner to help me do it. From all I've read on these forums over the past few months since I joined up, I firmly believe that what we need is a representative entity with an agenda and priorities set entirely by the adult Aspie community. Of course, this requires founding leadership that is willing to defer to what the community itself wants and needs. I'd be delighted to do that. I just need a like-minded other with enough influence to open certain doors. I don't have the time or the profile to do it alone.

That's what I have wanted to do too.
