Hello!

My name is Laura and I work for Assistance Dogs Australia. We provide Autism Support Dogs, completely free of charge, to families with children with autism and aspergers.

I just wanted to let you know that we have some upcoming workshops in the Gold Coast in May, where parents can find out how a dog can be a therapy tool for children with autism,and the pros and cons of having a trained dog in the home.

I love the idea about using dogs. Autistic people, myself included, can often relate easier with animals. But on costs, I noted the workshop had a $70 fee. Besides that is there any other cost for people wanting to get a dog? Is your program funded by the government?

I always wanted a seeing eye dog. But the reality of taking care of a pet is more than what it's worth for me sadly.

The $70 fee is for the three workshops, and covers resources and food. Other than that, as a client you will not have to pay anything to be matched with a dog. Assistance dogs are placed free of charge by Assistance Dogs Australia, who receive no ongoing government funding, and rely solely on donations and philanthropic support.

I like dogs, but I know that I would not be able to be the 24/7/365 'pack leader' that dogs need for them to maintain balanced healthy neuro. Licking is a big social thing for dogs too, and that ain't a happening thing for me.
