The 20-year-old travelled with his dad to watch the League Two fixture last Saturday and was knifed in the hand as he tried to act as a peacemaker
Probe: The fan was slashed after trouble flared at the Staff of Life pub before Bury's game with Carlisle United
An autistic football fan was slashed with a knife after trying to act as peacemaker in a pre-match clash between rival fans.
The 20-year-old Carlisle United fan had travelled with his dad to his side's game against Bury at Gigg Lane last Saturday when he was targeted by one home fan.
Police have now urged fellow fans to name the hooligan who knifed the man in the hand in the beer garden of a pub near the ground.
The Manchester Evening News reports the victim travelled with other Carlisle fans to watch his team play.
Their coach arrived in Bury at about noon so the supporters, including the victim, went to the Staff of Life pub for a drink.
Some of the group then left to get a takeaway, but when they returned, one fan had a cut under his eye. He explained he had been attacked with a beer bottle by some Bury FC supporters .
Police said the victim has 'a natural instinct to abhor violence and seek a peaceful solution' so offered to go and meet with the Bury fans to calm the situation down so they could all enjoy the match.
He left the pub with a few other Carlisle fans and headed to the Conservative Club on Back Brierley Street, off Parkhills Road.
As he made his way to the bowling and garden area of the club, he saw the offender and raised his hands in a defensive manner, saying ‘I don’t want any trouble.’
The victim then put his hand out in a gesture to shake hands, but the offender rushed forward and slashed the victim across his hand with a knife .
He collapsed due to the pain, and as he lay defenceless on the floor the thug kicked him repeatedly. Eventually the young man managed to get back to feet and ran off.
Police were called to the scene and a 56-year-old man from the Bury area was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.
He was later bailed until February 17, pending further inquiries. Officers are now appealing to anyone who has information to come forward.
Det Con Phil Slater said: “For all the wrong reasons, this young man will never forget his trip to Bury.
"This young man was genuinely frightened when he saw another fan had been attacked with a bottle and was attempting to play peacemaker.
"Because of his Asperger’s Syndrome and autism he naturally seeks to resolve any situation without fully realising any danger to himself but no-one could have anticipated the violence he would be subjected to.
"Such was the ferocity of this beating that he curled himself up into a ball while on the ground and thought he would be beaten to death.”
