Pupils at a school for children with autism spent one of their lessons on a Boeing 747 used by Hollywood stars, such as Brad Pitt and James Bond, to help familiarise them with aeroplanes.

Jigsaw School is based on Dunsfold Park, near Cranleigh and educates children aged four to 19 years with an autism spectrum disorder.

When teaching staff were asked for help by the parents of a pupil with a fear of aeroplanes, the obvious answer was to call on the support of Dunsfold Park, where a Boeing 747 is housed.

The plane is normally used for adverts, films and was once ‘saved from the bad guys’ during Casino Royale.

Many people with autism, including pupils at Jigsaw , can experience high levels of anxiety when faced with unfamiliar places and challenges such as navigating through an airport terminal and boarding an aircraft.

Some airports provide special packs for children with autism, including photos and short descriptions of every step, from arrival at the airport to boarding the plane.

Jigsaw’s educational visits coordinator, Jayne Lobley, said: “We work very closely with the parents of our pupils and do whatever we can to make home life as manageable as possible.

“As we approach the holiday season, we are only too aware of the challenges that parents can face when planning trips abroad.

“As we have a Boeing 747 on our doorstep we were very pleased to make the call to Dunsfold Park to ask for their help and we are incredibly grateful to them for all they have done to facilitate this.”

Jim McAllister, chief executive of Dunsfold Park Ltd added: “To be able to help acclimatise the children in preparation for the summer holidays is just one of many useful and interesting projects the 747 has been involved in since it arrived at the aerodrome in 2005.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this unique support to Jigsaw and their pupils.”
