Nico, 19, and Latoya, 23, have always struggled with social interaction and found it hard to maintain relationships. Now that they’ve found each other, they’re better than ever. (Picture: CNN)
This autistic couple who found love online are true relationship goals.
Just look how in love they are.
But things haven’t always been like that for the loved up pair.
Because both Nico Morales and Latoya Jolly both have Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, which means they struggle to develop and understand relationships.
Including romantic ones.
But after trying their luck on dating website AutisticDating.net, Nico, 19, and Latoya, 23, have fallen head over heels for each other.
Speaking to CNN, Nico said: ‘Honestly when I first met Latoya, my first thought was be still my beating heart. That is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life, she just looks so amazing.
‘Her glasses were reflecting the moonlight like a disco ball, she had the prettiest smile, her cheeks were so rosy, as rosy as they could possibly be.’
The pair first spoke to each other in December 2015, when Nico messaged Latoya through the dating site.
Soon after the couple went on their first date and have been inseparable ever since.
Latoya told the site: ‘I’ve kissed people on the cheeks before but not on the lips.’
Nico added: ‘I have received and given kisses on the cheeks but I’ve never really had a kiss on the lips besides Latoya.’
An estimated one in 68 children in the US has some form of autism spectrum disorder, according to a 2012 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Those with autism often fixate themselves on one particular hobby and often struggle with social interaction and communication.
Paige M. Siper, chief psychologist at the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment, told the site: ‘When two individuals with autism are in a relationship, they can relate to one another based on those interests.
‘They can kind of connect on that common ground. And sometimes, it’s around these areas of preoccupation.’
Latoya, who studies at Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek, Florida, said she often feels uncomfortable when she talks to people who are not autistic.
They usually don’t understand her condition, she says, which is why she may avoid eye contact during a conversation.
But with Nico, it’s different. She explained: ‘It’s easy to talk to him. I can understand, like, what he goes through and stuff. Because I went through the same thing, too.’
Nico, who attends Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, says Latoya helps him deal with the emotional ups and downs that people with autism typically go through.
He said: ‘I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve such an amazing woman like Latoya in my life. But who am I to question a good thing?’
Aww, you guys are too cute.
