A Montreal man who pleaded guilty to preying on autistic children has been sentenced to 22 months in jail. But with time spent in preventive custody, he'll be out tomorrow.
Phylip St-Jacques was arrested in December 2014 and charged with sexual contact with a minor and possessing, producing and accessing child porn.
St-Jacques, autistic himself, reached out to parents of autistic children in on-line forums for families of autistic kids, seeking help for things such as bathing their children. St-Jacques gained the confidence of the parents to get close to their autistic children and take nude photos and videos of them. Some of the victims were eight- and ten-years-old.
Claude Aubin, an ex-police officer who helped support the parents in the case, is pragmatic about St-Jacques's sentence. St-Jacques is also under three years probation, with several conditions such as restrictions on social media use and undergoing therapy.
"It's up to him now to do what he has to do. If he still does it, we're going to know," Aubin told CJAD 800 News.
"We cannot just throw the key away. We would throw the key away, it would be great, but it's not going to happen."
Some of the parents said they felt betrayed by St-Jacques.
"They were saying, 'I thought that he was a great person, I thought we could help him out,' and then at the very end, they said, I got conned," said Aubin.
"Now these parents are asking themselves, am I a good parent? We have to rebuild. Some of them were crying today."
